I have a question, whose thread have we hijacked this time?

Mine you THIEF....well, it wasn't going anywhere so I guess you can have it!

It's my gift to you!:D

1/4 mile? I wouldn't have guessed that far. 200 yards or so I'd guess. But I will say that it feels like a 1/4 or more when you've got on wetsuit, tanks, weights, etc and it's hot out.

Here's an overview map with indications of where you park and where the dive entry point is.... walk along the area indicated by the red line.

Here's a "close up" of the parking area and the beach access point. You walk down the sand along that long wall you see in the pic.

And one more "overview"

How far away from the rocks do you swim out, seems like you want to stay close to the rocks so as not to get so close to boat traffic in the channel? thanks in advance mike!

not get close to the boat traffic?
:lol::lol::lol:

I'm just a clueless newbie buddy.

what our local snorkeler is pointing and laughing about, is the boat traffic comes up to the beach. recreational boaters anchor all along the shore, and can be quite reckless in that pursuit. commercial tour platforms chug all along the channel wherever they please. be it in search of a good dive site, or dolphins. your best bet, is to hug the rocks as you go down, then keep to the bottom for the remainder of the dive.

please excuse her, she is just angry about...... everything

welcome to the area even if it is just to visit. the rest of us are much nicer in person. SeaYoda is the wise old sage of the local dive scene, and the jetties are his Dagobah (except on foggy mornings at Morrison Spring).

keep your eyes open in this forum. people are always organizing dives, and it is a great way to meet your future dive buddies if you want to try to catch up with someone who knows the area when you visit.

hehe, I see, I'm sure I'll see for myself when I get down there... Guess I was wondering how a boat manages to stay 100 feet (or whatever the "disobeyed" law says) from the divers flag and pass through the width of channel at the same time.

Im trying to dive the jetties for the first time. I would love to have someone show me where to go,the only problem is that Im not getting to fl till late fri nite.I was thinking about going sat,if you can come I would love to go

You pretty much swim at out anywhere you want. Most folks follow the area at the bottom of the rocks of the jetty.

As for dive flags, boats, etc... This is one dive spot that you will be clobbered with boats. It will sound like a "yard crew" with weed-eaters over your head as boats go over you the entire time.

Even the local dive shop boats don't obey the 100' or 300' rule to stay clear of a dive flag. No I'm not kidding. The local shops will throw out a flow with a flag on it and then motor right past your flag over to where they "throw anchor".

What most folks do is when they are diving there is to "stick" theif flag reel in this metal box that is about 1/3 or 1/2 way down the jetty underwater and leave it there. It's out of the main channel that way. No sense towing it further as most dumb-redneck-boaters don't know the rules or bother to pay attention to it. If anything, it serves a a "target".

If you do tow your flag, be prepared for your reel to have at least 60' of line on it as you'll easily reach 55' at the end of the jetty. more than 60' would be adviseable to allow some slope on the line.

If for some reason you do have to ascend to the surface while on the dive, just do so going up at an angle and follow the rocks up to the surface. The rocks will offer you more shelter.

As for the boats? how close do they get? directly right overhead. If the water is clear you can see them go over you and the cavitation trail their props leave.

Now... I'm not trying to scare you off from diving there... it's still fun. Just got to be cautious is all.
