Lemme give this another try...

Again, thanks to the orginal poster.

Daryl Morse, I too like the idea of an STA but I hate it when it cuts into my straps soooo, I sand down the edges and use a inner tube on my cam bands to protect them.

Nice try but no prise. These look like the Halcyon cam bands & buckles that do not require any velcro.

You get 1 more chance so better work on it a little harder... you're making this seem complicated.

A piece of metal that has been deburred should not cut the cam straps too much.

Yup. My Fred T deburred STAs have several hundred dives on them and have never damaged the origional cam straps.

For what its worth, the Halcyon single tank adapter has stainless steel buckles and has a layer of thick velcro to secure the buckles. The STA is deburred and is a little over 1# negatively buoyant.

Velcro... isn't that a failure point? Or does it make it OK if it is built by Halcyon.

Vayu:
I prefer a single tank adapter to not having one. This is my preference due to the fact that the added weight of the adapter can be helpful. It is possible to weight the plate, weight the adapter, or put weight on the cambands. I prefer this one method. The advantage of the adapter is that it holds the plate tightly and the tank has little oppurtunity to roll from one side to the other(which is common in some STA-less singles wings). I have a preference for metal on the straps, however the DSS rigs do not appear to be this way. I also happen to be madly in love with STA's in general.

Regarding your tank rolling without an STA, you might need to put a little muscle into strapping it. :D
-And I myself find it much easier to tighten the cambands than to get those STA wing nuts tighened hard enought from keeping the whole STA from swagging. Actually one could need a pair of pliers to fix that each time, so my choice when diving with one all of last year was to keep the STA & wing mounted on the BP the whole time.

If you do it right you'll find that the buildt in rods in your Golem does the trick just fine, and as a bonus you have one less thing with you down, and your tank actually comes half an inch closer to your back bone. AND you don't get your tanks scratched!

(DIR Zone = European Golem counterpart...)

And STA doesn't come for free. Yet over here the Golem-equivalent complete rig costs the same as the Halcyon Eclipse w/STA. My idea is that they've put a little more quality into the wing itself rather than lowering the price. But as I'm a dealer myself I'm of course biased. Yet it's my opinion! :D

As for weight I do of course only use steel tanks. I have a p-weight mounted inside the plate + I use some dropable weights in an ordinary belt under my web (4 lbs doesn't make much of itself there. Hardly noticable.)

Vayu:
There are several good companies around here for us to patronize. This all underlines the importance of a buyer to do research on the product... STA's, different wings and designs, and all these companies can be alot of overload for someone unfamiliar with the system.

As for Diverite, there is nothing wrong with some of their products. However, they make rigs meant to be used for both doubles and singles. They have some wings with bungee on them. I choose to support manufacturers that do not entertain such ideas and stick to what works and what is known to work. For me that means a big slab of steel, some washers and a bolt. For others this means DSS torus wings and their opinions should be noted as well.

Good luck! Lots of different opinions here, and that can only be a positive thing for the original poster and those looking to learn more.

Your points about "rigs meant to be used for both doubles and singles" is just my idea too! :coffee:

i'm pretty sure my velcro argon tank mount is trying to kill me...

sometimes i hear it whispering to me at night...

lamont,

So true, I hear the DIR Gods speaking and the next evolution would be this:

1. SS chains instead of 2" straps.
2. No more "velcroless" cam bands, now you MUST WELD your tanks to your plate.
3. No more punchureable wings, now you must weld a truck wheel and tire to your plate.
4. Regulators must have fewer than 5 moving parts.
5. 1 piece fin/bootie no more frigging ss spring strap.

Darn, they have stopped speaking....
