I remember the first time I mentioned to a co-worker (Local man from Waipahu) that I was diving out of Waianae Boat Harbor and he said "take a side arm". But I've parked my car in the marina a number of times and nothing has ever happened.

Maybe the charter operators have some sort of agreement with the locals there?

My local friends are mostly townies, educated Japanese or Chinese with professional jobs. I wonder if they are exaggerating a little. While I believe the threat is real, what I wonder is how dangerous is it compared to say the Tenderloin in San Francisco, Compton in LA, etc. (all places I've been to).

Needing a "side arm" is for a different problem than ice heads busting in your car for valuables to hock.

Hey SB'ers!

I've just gotta ask, out of ignorance I guess, why complaining to the police doesn't lead to stake out/sting action to deter the crime?

If police are not effective then city council, attorney general, state police, congressman and then senator should be notified.

Once again, I'm not there but it sounds like you feel pretty helpless against these thugs. In our country I'm sure that there are options. If I'm wrong I'd like to know how. Sounds like a pretty serious state and one that local law doesn't seem to be able to handle.

A newspaper headline from a couple months trumpeted that something like "90% of Robberies Go Unsolved"

I can't remember quite what type crime they were specifically talking about, whether it was felony, burglary, robbery or what. But it doesn't inspire faith in the police.

On occasion there will be a patrol car idling in the parking lot, but you never know how long he's gonna stay there. And as soon as he's gone the Unsavory Characters are out.

8% of felonies were solved and only like 20% of homicides. Like we can get them to do anything about a simple break in.....

Those numbers are appalling! And it is an island for heaven's sake. Its not like they can drive across state lines or the next county to evade the law! The law appears to not give a damn out there.

Ya should see the numbers for car thefts! LMAO..Yet they don't want us to have guns?
A recent incident that didn't make the papers, five air force boys out camping and drinking, some local and them had words. The locals came back with somewhere from 20 to 40 braddas and beat the crap out of them. Brain damage, mutpl fractures, all serious to critical. The island boys are big yet they won't go toe to toe, they come back as a big group. And who are there cousins? Hawaiis finest men in blue! What a joke........

same here - I usually get the skeptical look when I say that I'm diving out of Waianae. However, I've never had a problem (knock on wood). I sometimes get into conversations with the guys that are fishing there or just hanging out and I've never gotten a hostile vibe or that I should be concerned about my car. But I'm always there in the middle of the day or late afternoon - I've never been there at night.

Electric Beach is another matter, though.

Considering that my family and many friends fit your description, I can pretty much safely assure you that these townies probably do not go out to Waianae, Nanakuli or Makaha at all. ;) In my experience it's a perception that is not completely unwarranted, but is exaggerated.

A cute asian female vs a white guy? Of course you didn't have any problems;)

Unfortunetly drugs in hawaii are very common and in alot of communities it is socially acceptable. I teach and about 60% of my students have tried drugs and alot of their parents use. Although there are a lot of honest police officers the old boy net work is very much in effect in hawaii.

The dive car doesn't work. My 500 dollar 1982 toyota corona was stolen. (what does it say when your regulator costs more than your car?) I simply empty out my car of any thing valuable and hope for the best. I don't even leave my wallet anymore, It stays at the dive shop.

Crime is one of the reasons I stopped diving the west shore, I used to live up by makaha and I was just shocked at the open drug use and petty crime. Beer bottles being thrown at you when you run doesn't help either.

I feel the East Coast is fairly safe, the North shore is O.K. as long as it's not to late and the only problem on the south shore is a parking ticket....

enjoy the dive
