Probably should get on with assembling your own twinset.

No nut inside the clamping section.

+1 for Nylock nuts but split washers work fine, too.

I haven’t seen any arguments why having that extra nut there is valuable
Jaime Coleman already gave you the clue. 😉 Normally if present, that middle nut is on the other side of the space and locks against the "head" side. [ETA: see @iointerrupt's image above.] The purpose is to prevent the bolt from spinning when you try to disassemble the bands. The OP's nut as pictured would not do that, and even worse (as you pointed out), it currently prevents further tightening of the bands (from that side, at least).

You guys are great! Seriously, I really appreciate all of the advice. I've been diving these for about 4 years now, with mixed experiences after visuals. (I have never reassembled them myself.) At one point, I did cut the bolts down, but, honestly, the cutting was a quite a bit more of a hassle than I had anticipated. I don't think these are the same bolts that I dropped them off with this time around.

These are, as people guessed, 7.25" bands, but, I am told, that is common for LP85s, and I know I'm not the only one. I will order 7" bands from Piranha and either pull things apart this season and put those on, or next season when they get taken apart again for viz.

I'm going to read all of this through again a few times and then decide what to do. In theory, it does not look hard to fix . . . in theory.

Again, appreciate the input from everyone.

The rest of the story. IME using 7.25" for 6.9"/7" cylinders is not common other than a common mistake.

That said, I would return to the shop that did the work because the nut between the bands is fubar and prevents the bands from being tightened properly. If the cylinders shift the manifold apt to be damaged.

At that same time ask them if they put new bolts on. And if so why.

Whichever nuts you use, their configuration in each differing situation is up to you to choose
