We saw some big ones on the east side at El Islote, but I believe that's still technically in the park.

I saw one of the biggest ones I've ever seen at about ~90 ft in Columbia Deep last week. That said, I only saw about 3-4 other small ones over the course of a week. Of course, nobody with a spear around.

I think that site is on the east side of the island, well outside of the park.

It is on the southeast corner, but Franko's shows the park wrapping around the southern end of the island. I hope that's correct, so 3 of my 4 Coz dives were in the park :)

Yeah, El Islote is the small rocky islet that you can see just offshore from the Maya Ruin Caracol at Punta Sur Park. I see Franco's map still has Cinco Puertas ruin marked on it. That got completely erased during Wilma. Previously, it was a Maya building with five doors. Then it partially caved in and there were only three doors. Then one door. Then the hurricane washed it all away. Playa Box is misspelled on his map. It was named after Pablo Bush (Playa Bush) and was often pronounced "Bosh" which would be spelled out "Box" if a Maya were spelling it, or someone who thought it was a Mayan word hearing it pronounced that way. Bush found and recovered some cannons there in the 1960s.

I see that Franco updated his map with the exact wording of the warning texts I wrote and use on my Yellow map. Flattered.

I read your yellow and history books while traveling for work this week, so the first thing I noticed on that map was them saying Cozumel is Mayan for Island of Swallows. The Republic of Texas annexation attempts blew me away. Do you think that would've been a good or terrible thing?

I guess we should start a new thread.

Those Texicans in those days couldn't even manage their lands north of El Paso. President Lamar sent an expedition to establish claims as far west as the Rio Grande (which turns north from El Paso, thru Albuquerque, to Colorado), but they got lost and wintered below the Caprock in the Panhandle. The older half then returned to south Texas while the younger half were arrested when they reached Santa Fe, were captured by Mexican soldiers, then marched to Mexico City with some surviving the trip. Lamar made a number of errors in those days.

Nah, this is Scuba Board.

I am curious how Cuzamil became Cozumel. Is that he Mayan word for swallow?
See the new thread I just started about History. I tell the story of how Cozumel got its name, and how the myth of "land of the swallows" started.
