Thanks to everyone who has chimed in so far. Given the overall lack of SM instructors locally, I'm relaxing that requirement and thinking about taking the classes from Mel Clark. My instructor at Protec Tulum knows her, so that helps a bit with communication and expectations. She also teaches Kiss, JJ, and Meg CCR's, so down the road (ok, way down the road) when I'm ready to make that jump, it would be nice to know her instruction style.
 
Thanks for clarifying on Fundies with SM. I know GUE has been more accepting of SM as of late, and whoever told me that must have been taking it too far...
They would say use the right tool for the job. SM for deco dives in Puget Sound wouldn't be the right choice really under any scenario. Locally all GUE classes, events, and dives are on hold anyway. They dont want to be a burden on first responders or the hospital should something bad happen.
