So am I... He told me that he took them off for some reason... Hopefully he can get it checked before he ships it... Then I don't have to worry about it for a year. I thought it was kind of odd my self...

Where in the Pac NW you from? Oregon or WA?

I'm confused too... about the tanks...

nanner,
OMS are Faber tanks and are made of steel... you said that the non-VIP'd tank was Al...

Sorry my bad... I meant Steel not aluminum... I don't own any Aluminum tanks... All steel

nanner,
If you bought the tank used off e-bay (not that there's anything wrong with that) you should definatly get it VIP'd. if it's a steel tank, you have no idea how the last owner treated it, and it could be full of rust and need a good tumble too.

It's gonna stink, but I think you're gonna have to swallow it and take the tank to the shop you don't like... or... another one further away that you do like...

Thanks for all of your opinions and sorry for the little confusion caused.... I will have to do some calling to see if any one local can do it (gas company, fire extinguisher place)...

Pug can you recommend any local shops for the Hood Canal area?

nannerb,

If you're working towards getting on the FD dive team and getting your fills there, does the FD have Scott air packs or equivalent? Generically these are referred to “Self Contained Breathing Apparatus” or SCBA. Their cylinders must be inspected as well, so there SHOULD be someone on the FD staff that’s PSI trained for inspection of the SCBAs that the department is using. Or they may be giving them to someone outside that’s properly trained for inspection (and you could get their name from the FD).

Point is, the cylinder inspection training covers both SCUBA and SCBA cylinders, so whoever is doing their inspection should be able to do your cylinder as well.

On the flip side many departments don’t inspect their cylinders, which is very, very dangerous since the SCBA cylinders are subjected to a lot of abuse (getting knocked around as well as exposed to considerable heat). If this is the case with your department, here’s a chance to really schmooze them. Go get PSI trained (http://www.psicylinders.com/) and become their cylinder inspector.

There’s a possibility that if you’re a volunteer with the FD, you could deduct the cost of the class off your taxes, but that’s for your tax guy to figure out.

I definately concur. Even if it has a valid hydro and vip, I would
still take the time and money to check it yourself. How many
people buy a used car without taking a close look at it. When
you're playing with tanks, your playing with your life...
