News item - Canada:

In a related item transport Canada is rumoured to be putting regulations in place requiring VIP's to be done by licensed inspectors and facilities.

All VIP stickers will have to be numbered sequentially and with the facility who inspected them.

It's about time.

I'm wondering like Uncle -- if you're getting them filled at the FD, do you need them? If you do, go once a year to the LDS and have your tanks checked and get the stickers then.
Absolutely!
I was just waiting to make a point with nanner....
But I see that I could end up leaving the wrong impression if nanner doesn't respond...

Hey nanner... you are getting your air free... so pay for the stinking VIP every year at the LDS...

~ Or ~

Get the training, certification, stickers and do your own VIPs... but don't put the guys filling your tanks at risk because you didn't want to drive two hours once a year...

1. I need the VIP sticker in order for them to fill any tanks. 2. I don't get my air free..... It is 5 bucks until I get on the dive team... Where do I take a class at? I already own one, but I just bought another in Hydro but not VIP and would like to get it filled without driving to the LDS who doesn't like me anyways because I didn't buy anything from them

 It's not apparent from your posts if you know what a VIP sticker is, but I'm going to assume that you do. If they are
requiring you have a valid visual inspection on your tanks to fill
them, then just slapping a sticker on it endangers you, and
anyone within 50 feet of your tank being filled.

Take the time to get to a reputable shop and have your tanks inspected. There's more ways to get yourself killed diving then
being underwater!

OK... I should have waited for your response... but I didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea....

1. Good
2. Too bad but hopefully you will get on the team soon
3. You probably won't find taking the class cost effective
4. Check with the local fire extinguisher service shop for hydros and VIPs.
5. Take the drive if you can't get it done anywhere else but do not slap a sticker on the tank.
6. Where are you located in Oregon?
7. What kind of tank is it and what are the numbers if it is Aluminum.

It is an aluminum tank.. I am in rural Eastern Oregon... Do medical tanks have the same requirements? We have a gas company (o2, etc.) in town... Would they be able to do that sort of stuff?

Did you buy the tank used off of ebay?
There were tanks made in the past from an alloy that allowed stress cracks to develop after sustained load. These tanks need to have more than a standard VIP... a VIP+ or eddy current test is required. What are the numbers on the tank neck? You really need to take the trip to the dive shop for this one. The gas supply house probably can't help you in this case.

ahhhemmm....
I just noticed in the Tank Poll thread that you state your non-steel tanks are already condemned... so what are we talking about here?

The Faber is Brand new... Just bought it a couple of days ago from the shop... The OMS I bought off ebay - It is a year old in hydro and vip, but he took the vip sticker off. The condemed are some old ones that I want to make bells out of... Saw it in Newport and was pretty nifty
