I was telling my brother yesterday that I was going to learn to dive and he astounded me by coming out with:

'You're far to old for that!'

After a fist fight, :boxing: he explained his reason was that as you get older your lung capacity declines!

What age am I? 37!!!!!! A mere babe in arms.

Now he know absolutely nothing about diving (obviously
:) ) but it kind of got me wondering. I would have thought diving was something that people could do well into their lives assuming basic medical fitness etc

Any views?

Ps - I think my brother is having a midlife crisis at 40!

Hi Brizzolatti

Unless there is a medical reason that would prevent you from scuba diving, I say go for it!!! 37, 47, 57, 67 years old etc. isn't too old if that's what you want to do.

My Grandfather is 93 and is going through the scuba diving class. He's legally blind and can't hear very well. If he can do it, so can you.:boom:

Hey, Walter. Yes - that's the policy I've been adopting for the last 37 years!!:D

Can't see me changing in the next 37.

As I read this, I am highlighting my hair to hide the gray, so you hit a nerve, I suppose.
Anyway, I was 35 when I started, and I had not done anything physical in years. Diving inspired me to become more active. 37 is not old!
Diving, as I am sure you have noticed, requires both cash and patience, two things in short supply when I was younger.

Actually brizzolatti, a quick check on the PADI website says that the average diver is 36. You have plenty of time. Good luck.

54.
Young 54.

On one trip, I dove all week with a wonderful couple. They needlessly apologized for their "newbie mistakes." They were both in their 70's and had only been diving about a year.

And in my prior life, I taught a 75 year old grandmother to windsurf. When she returned to Thailand, she was hoping to be able to shock her 18 year old grandson by taking his gear out when he was resting. I can just imagine his reaction. :whoa:

You're never too old.
