I find it hilarious that everyone against pot has no reading comprehension skills.

*sigh* Why is it that people who have the least amount of 'clue' about something are the most vocal about it? Smoking pot is less harmful than beer or smokes... I wouldn't recommend doing it before a dive (or after I guess) but I doubt it will have any long term effect.

About the lungs... If you are smoking the equivilant of a pack of smokes a day in weed, there's a problem. Other than that I can't see it having long term effects.

There are no 'flash-backs' or whatever... this is nonsense. It all comes down to the person using the drug. If they were a diligent diver they won't become all crazy and dangerous because they smoke pot on occassion. I'd be more concerned with a regular drinker...

Please get educated about this if you are going to comment. That goes for the docs out there too....

My mom knew a guy who dived while baked. He came out of the water, threw his fins off and ran up the beach screaming that the nudibranchs were gonna get him. No lie. To be fair, those Spanish Shawls can get pretty vicious when they've had a few drinks in em...

Ishie

That wasn't POT.............

Marijuana clouds your thinking and your judgment.

Pot makes people more likely to do things they might regret later on. More kids are hurt in car crashes and are victims of violence when they use marijuana than when they are straight. In addition, pot reduces coordination and concentration. It's harder to do things--like sports, dancing, acting, and studying. Keep in mind that marijuana is illegal using, holding, buying, or selling it can get you suspended or expelled from school, and even jail time.

If smoking marijuana is a sign of bad judgement, is it the bad judgement that caused the smoking, or the smoking that caused the bad judgement?

I fail to see how smoking pot can cause someone to get their arse kicked. In my experience, pot smokers are less likely to start fights (or anything else) than non-smokers.

I suppose that would explain why my stoner ex-housemate was so good at complicated video games.

...and easier to do things like painting, playing guitar, and tedious yardwork.

Yes, the laws against marijuana can get a person in real trouble. If green beans were illegal, they'd be a dangerous plant to posess too.

... all of which is far afield from the question posed by the thread originator.

If you want to discuss the merits or demerits of pot-smoking, this really isn't the forum to do so.

If, on the other hand, you wish to address the original question, that's a different matter altogether ... to my concern, no one's done that yet.

Fair enough Bob.

In response to the original question, I think just about everyone here would agree at the very least that when diving, you want to be alert and able to quickly deal with problems. Since ingesting a mind-altering substance means you might be slow to react, and may react inappropriately, doing so when scuba diving means you're potentially putting yourself and your buddies at greater risk. That's a bad idea.

These problems may (or may not) be compounded by the poorly understood effects these substances will have on the body and mind under increased pressure.

Whether it's pot, alcohol, cough syrup, or LSD isn't really important to the discussion. The bottom line is that diving while under the influence of any behavior and perception altering drugs is not to be condoned.

This seems to contradict your previous post to me, but it makes more sense.
Glad to see we got back on topic of the affects in diving.

I've lived and worked in the tropics for 28 years in various locations and except for Malaysia, where you will do serious time for it, I would guess that 75% of the people I knew working in diving smoked weed pretty often. Most of them were under 40 so "long term" affects may not yet be known. Some were very successful dive shop owners who dive regularly. Also, most smoked cigarets. And here....just go past the gas dock in Placencia and inhale.....I mean, you're in the Caribbean.... Bob Marley country. I don't see any obvious bad effect on divers who smoke.
