Traveling in February. 40 minute connection. My prediction is that we will make the connection. I’ll be sure to post back.

@Candiru, are you traveling to Brac by Feb 16 or after? According to the current schedule, there is a 5:45 pm plane from GCM to CYB through Feb 16, so if you are delayed you might get on it if there is space. But it is scheduled to end after Feb 16 and the 5:15 pm will be the last plane.

We just used the Meet and Greet service and it was great. See my post here Visiting Grand Cayman - Things to Do and See - Besides Diving!

Thanks @mi000ke, the reports of experiences at the GCM airport vary, but most folks that travel on the weekend describe delays and crowds and that has usually been my experience, too. I think that Saturday is probably the worst day, but one time we traveled home from Little Cayman on a Sunday and I was disappointed at how busy and slow it was at GCM, I was hoping it would be better on Sunday.

And right now it is like "the perfect storm" because winter is the most popular, busiest season; the airport is still in the midst of a huge expansion and renovation project; and Grand Cayman is experiencing an all-time record high of visitors (both cruise ship and overnight) because of all the hurricane damage to many other Caribbean destinations last year. Also, if there is bad winter weather in some of the US or Canadian destinations it causes back ups and delays all along the transportation chain.

Below are 2 messages posted on the Trip Advisor Travel Forum yesterday by 2 different people who had the opportunity to sample the GCM airport experience on a Saturday. The first message was by a woman who had already spent a week on GC and she and her husband were traveling to Brac yesterday. They are snorkelers not divers and are staying in a condo. She reports terrible crowds, slow security, and missing luggage:

"Well I just left Grand Cayman today around 2:45. The airport was a nightmare. I was told because it is Saturday. People were sitting on the floor. One person was lying on the floor. I went to get some food around 1:00 pm and they were sold out of many items. I have never seen so many people squished together. If there had been some emergency, it would have caused big problems. Plus the loudspeakers were barely audible due to the system and poor English. Security went slow…Then on top of it we arrived at Cayman Brac missing a case. Said it would be delivered in the evening. No case in the evening. Now it is to be delivered in the morning. At least we have bathing suits so we are ok.”

The second message is from someone that was arriving on Grand Cayman yesterday and said that it took them hours to get out of the airport:

“Just to clarify my message-this is not my first time in Cayman, (was last here 2015- also very busy but airport was nothing like this-It literally took us 3 hours to leave the airport after departing the plane) and I travel quite a bit and understand how dramatically travel has changed since 911…”

We are leaving on a Sunday prior to feb 16th. I see on the schedule that there is the 545 flight, but that doesn’t seem available on the website. I’ll have to call and see what’s up. I suspect that the last flight has been canceled.

They officially added in the later 545 pm flight yesterday to accommodate the flight from Chicago.

That's great news, if you miss the earlier flight it will give you another option as long as it isn't full.

This is a long-shot, but are you traveling to GCM on Cayman Air via Miami? I ask because they will soon start pre-screening US citizens traveling on Cayman Air at the gate in Miami before boarding the plane. That means that you would skip immigration on arrival and go straight to baggage claim, customs, rechecking, and security to travel to Brac; but I don't know how quickly they will get the pre-screening program in place. It would be great if they could launch it soon, because this is the high travel season, see the link below:

US Travelers to Cayman Will Pre-Screen in Miami to Avoid Immigration Lines

By the way, delayed bags are not uncommon when traveling to the Sister Islands. I think that it happens more often with Little Cayman because LCM only receives smaller planes like Twin Otters and only during the daylight hours, but it does happen on Brac, too. If your dive gear is delayed it is very annoying but the dive shop will loan you free equipment until your gear arrives so you won't miss dives.

Try to carry your absolute essentials onboard with you. If you are on one of the Twin Otters they are small planes and there isn't much room for carry-ons. Often you will have to check backpacks and smaller suitcases that are generally considered as carry-ons on larger aircraft. I bring a large purse that I can either squish under the seat in front of me or hold on my lap during the short flight. I stuff it with medications, contact lenses, sunglasses, toothbrushes, phones, IDs, money, travel documents, credit cards and C-Cards, swimsuits, and a change of underwear for both of us.

In November when we arrived on Little Cayman in the early afternoon, our gear made it but the bag with almost all our clothes and personal items did not. It didn't show up until the next afternoon. We had our essentials and dive gear and the hotel (the LCBR) offered to launder our few clothes for free so we were okay; but it does happen so you may want to be prepared.

Where will you be staying? If you are at the CBBR then your meal package will begin with dinner the night you arrive. I think that the food is very good, especially for a small, all-inclusive resort. I believe that the dining room opens at 6:30 pm and closes at 8 pm or 8:30 pm. The problem is that most of the guests show up at 6:29 pm and the buffet can look picked over and sad if you get there late. However, they can accomodate late arrivals - they make special arrangements to offer a nice, fresh selection for night divers on nights when they offer night dives; and if the dining room is closed when you get there - they could also serve you at no charge at the beach bar that has a limited, but tasty a la carte menu. So if they refer you to a sorry looking buffet, don't hesitate to ask for something better.

If you are staying at a rental property, be aware that the stores are closed on Sunday so will need to buy food and supplies on Monday. You might want to bring a few breakfast bars with you so that you have something to eat until you stock up. You can contact the rental property manager in advance and ask him/her to pre-shop to stock your kitchen and provide a short list. There may be a fee for this service, but it could be worth it, especially if you want to go diving early.

Hope you don't mind all my "safe advice" but I wish you a great trip!

We are flying out of ORD so I’m guessing we won’t be prescreened. We are staying at CBRR so hopefully we don’t miss our connection and we have some tasty food waiting for us.

@Candiru They have opened the new arrivals hall at GCM but the problem with long wait lines continue during the high season and with a record number of visitors arriving on the island; especially on weekends and when several planes land around the same time - see the article and pictures at the link below.

Since you will be arriving late on a Sunday maybe it won't be so crowded, but I suggest that you dress comfortably and wear a shady hat and good shoes; and I would look for some travel-sized SPF sunscreen or towelettes that will fit in your zip-lock carry on bag. You might also want to fill up a water bottle after you get through security before boarding your flight to GCM, although you may not be close to a restroom while waiting in line!

Have you given any more thought to using the Meet and Greet service? It might be worth it to pay $75 to avoid this mess! And it will cost a lot more than that to overnight on GC if it becomes necessary.

We left ord 45 minutes late. Made up 16 minutes in the air and deplaned at 505 look over and our Saab flight yo Cayman Brac was boarding. We waived down an airline representative and explained we were suspised yo be excourted to the plane. They held the plane while we ran through security. Made the plane at the last second as our luggage was put on. The escort guy said they never hold the plane that long so we felt very lucky to have made it.

Wow, that was lucky - so glad you made it! How did you arrange an escort, did you decide to book the Meet & Greet, after all? It's annoying that you have to pay extra just to make your connection but it would have much more costly if you had to overnight on GC.

Have a great trip!
