I did the same thing with the light and the SPG for a while after Fundamentals, but after REC Triox it became abundantly clear that the system works well only if every team member is on the same page. Even small changes can cause the system to break down under water.
I had an issue with cord as well. It never got caught on anything, but on video I saw that is hung low. I sent it back to Dive Rite and had them shorten the length two inches. As far as the SPG goes, do not check it when task loaded. Your SPG is you back up pressure gauge (your mind is the primary one). You should have a good idea of your pressure at all times. If all hell beaks loose under water, get everything under control then check you SPG. As for the light on the right hand; Im sure you can perform an OOG scenario without shining your light in your team members eyes consistently in a controlled situation, but why even risk the chance that you might not be able to in a real life situation.
