Note the cunning lawyer response. He's not thanking JeffG. :14:
Are you saying JeffG is not a DIR diver?

No...he is saying thank Andy wouldn't thank me for my comments.

CD_in_Chitown:
I want to know how having the SPG hooked to the chest d helps the situation, what with inflator hoses and stages I mean its kind of full already it seems.

sure...

basically, i don't have to clip and unclip the SPG if on the chest; i just look at
it and move on.

with the SPG on the hip, i have to reach around the bottom of the stage bottle,
and then clip it. this is difficult for me. i have practiced and practiced. i'm just
one of those people who have little dexterity if i am not looking at what i am
doing.

i have gone through numerous drills of passing stage bottles, clipping and
unclipping them, and passing them back (just this Sunday, for example, we
spend about 40 minutes doing this), and the SPG on the chest d-ring was not
a problem

CD_in_Chitown:
I think spg at the chest might cause problems with Inflator hose routing and stage connections, has this been an issue?

well, not so far. i've done four dives so far with the new (non-DIR)
configuration, with stages on two of them.

like i said above, we spent about 40 minutes passing stage tanks back and forth,
and it just wasn't an issue.

You're Welcome.

the issue is, "is there a better way to do x than the DIR way?"

I'm not at all sure that I've taken away from this that the changes you have made are better than the way you were taught. You have moved the SPG because you have problems with clipping and unclipping; I don't, so I won't move it -- is your way better? You have problems with a light cord that is long enough to catch on stuff. You have chosen to manage the extra length by wrapping around your arm. You could shorten the cord, or put some kind of loop in it, but this way works for you. Is it better? My cord doesn't have the extra length, so I don't have the problem, so I'm not going to move mine.

If it's important to be DIR, one needs to figure out a way to get things done within their paradigm. If it's not important to be DIR (eg. you have plenty of non-DIR buddies to do all the dives you want with) then you can solve these issues any way you want.

vladimir:
Perhaps it's a bit nuanced, but Andy is a lawyer, and I'd bet he makes a distinction between seeking responses from DIR divers and seeking a DIR response.

I guess that's why he said, "i'd like DIR diver's responses, which is why i put it here"

And so you have it!
DIR responses from DIR trained divers!

It has been pointed out earlier in the thread that the light in the right hand may present an unsafe situation during OOG situation.(due to blinding your buddy or inability to signal rest of team)
The response was I would hold my hand in a some other way or that temporary blinding was not an issue.
IMO this in it self represents a possible unsafe attitude.
Therfore My comment about not choosing to dive except on Rec. dive.
Doesnt matter to me if he's a lawyer or the president of the USA.
