Chicago Scuba Meetup (CSM), a dive club in Chicago, is having its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 7pm at Lalo's Restaurant (basement) in Lincoln Park. Our presenter this month is Josh Ellis with the Metropolitan Planning Council. Reports are that this is a really interesting presentation and of course the issue is very timely.

More information on CSM is here Chicago Scuba Meetup and more information on this event: May Meetup-NOTE CHANGE IN DAY THIS MONTH-Josh Ellis talks about Asian Carp

We hope to see many new faces!

We have re-arranged our meetup this month in order to bring in our special guest, Josh Ellis of the Metropolitan Planning Council. There is no issue more important for us that work and play in Lake Michigan than the Asian Carp crisis. Josh will bring us his insights.

Since late 2009 Asian carp and the possibility of closing the navigation locks into Lake Michigan have dominated the newspapers. What has been largely missing from these discussions is a longer-term look at the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS) to consider what kind of system overhaul might be necessary to support the region’s economic and environmental goals, while also ending the threat of invasive species transfer between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. Josh Ellis, associate with the Metropolitan Planning Council, will explore how the Asian carp should serve as a catalyst for rethinking a wide range of CAWS issues.

Josh has been an associate with Metropolitan Planning Council since 2006. His focus is on advancing MPC’s environmental and economic goals through policy research, advocacy, and community engagement. He manages MPC’s water resources protection initiatives, co-authored Before the Wells Run Dry, and now works with state, regional and local leaders on strategies to sustainably manage Illinois' finite water resources.

We will be meeting in the basement at Lalo's. As usual, we will have a Meet and Greet at 7:00, where we will have an opportunity to order food and drink. Our business meeting will be at 7:30 and our presentation will start at 8:00.
