Up here where we dive the St.Lawrence river and the Niagara River the split fins are a struggle to use. They might be ok if you dive in places with no current.
 
The ones that "broke" have the lightning bolt and were purchased around 1982. Maybe I'll take them back and see if the local dealer will honor the warranty! That's going to be interesting!

As far as split vs the non split, for controlled scientific diving, I do not seem to have good control nor can I back up as easily as I can with the non-split ones. Could be I just don't have as much practice, but I do feel more confident with the non split ones.
