    Freedive weighting?

My rule of thumb is a kilo of lead for each milimeter of wetsuit and whatever else you have on. Haven't had any problems so far. Believe I have read that in a freediving book somewhere (Umberto's book?)

    Typhoon Wipha

I'm on Miyako Island in southern Okinawa. The typhoon went right over us Monday night (Japan time). Didn't get a wink of sleep because it was so loud. No a lot of damage even though it was pretty strong when it went over us.

set me straight on regulators please!

Already been said, but I'll say it again...If you dive once a year, just rent stuff. No point in dropping a bunch of money to just let stuff sit. I don't have that many dives under my belt and I'm already thinking about the things I should have bought.

    Xploring Perhentian Island!

What are those things coming out of the sand before the talking shrimp and fish? How big are they?

I want a knife! (err... "Dive Tool" ... yeah, that's it!!)

Buy a double sided steel knife and dremel one side flat, so that it isn't sharp. Or buy a single sided knife and grind/dremel down the tip. Easy to do. I use this knife:http://www.123scuba.com/p-KN4260.html It's easy and secure to use and only one side has a blade (line cutter on other...

Diving with a steel tank and a wetsuit??? A dangerous idea?

Sheesh, where I'm at I can't even get Aluminum tanks. We only dive steel. And half the year people are in shorties.

Back Inflation Divers Can you do this?

No problems for me, but I found that I had to fiddle with the weights a bit before I got the balance perfect.

Supreme Court upholds legality of manufacturers requiring MAP and MARP.

I don't understand something. If the shops buy products from a manufacturer, then the shop is paying a wholesale price, right? So then, why would the manucturer care how much the product is sold for? They've already made their money from the shop, so what's it to them? Status???

    Dive watch

Look at www.superchrono.com and www.21jewels.com. They are both out of Singapore, but the stuff they sell is legit. And they have the best prices of any place I've found on net. Free shipping too. $320 for the Citizen 20th Anniversary...Cheaper than Ebay.

    Newbie Gear

Try the new mask on under water before you buy it. I got a Mares X-vision mid and it fit when I did the breath test in the shop. Bought it and got it into the water and it leaks like crazy. Not as good a fit as I thought. Snorkel, flexible on that can be put in a BC pocket. I hate having them...

    Warranty and Japan

Had 50 bar left. Corrosion...possible. It was a rental tank and I didn't bother to look at any of the numbers. But my regulator worked fine, just the octo didn't.

    Warranty and Japan

Hello. Quick question. I purchased a proton (metal) octo last November and on a dive last week had the thing stop working on me. When I pressed the purge button at the end of the dive to dislodge any material that got in during the dive, no air came out. Nothing. The question is: Is Mares...

    yet another LeisurePro thread (Atomic)

Just a note on my experience: I asked scubatoys if I could purchase an atomic reg from them. They told me that I had to go to the shop to get it since they aren't allowed to sell atomic products over the phone or email or internet. Anyone have a different experience?

    Konichiwa from Japan

Sheesh, you're doing all of your certifications in Japanese? My hats off to you. I did my OW last October in Japanese...the hardest thing I've ever done with Japanese. I'm headed to AOW and Rescue. Welcome to Scubaboard. If you're ever down in Miyako, give a holler.

    SeaQuest I3

A cheap option would be the Riptide Zone that Scubatoys has on sale. Really nice rig. Basically no pockets unless you use a weight belt and turn the weight pouches into pockets. Nice rig and cheap. Back inflate all the way.

    Pinnacle Merino vs. Regular Neoprene

I currently am diving the 5 mil merino Pinnacle with a hooded vest. Perfect combination. But, I am diving in Southern Okinawa with water temps of 21-23 degrees celsius. I stay plenty warm with that combo and sure you could go colder, but much beyond that and I'd definitely want a 7 mil suit...

Suit thickness for 19-23 C water?

Yeah, that hood/vest is almost identical to the one I have (deepsee). For I've been diving several times the last couple of weeks and my friends without hoods always ended up shivering withouth a hood. Vital in my opinion. It also seems to help seal off the neck seal better meaning that less...

im planning to buy this set up... what do u think??

I got certified here in Okinawa (subtropical) with a regular Jacket style BC. I'm now using a back inflate BC and much, much prefer it to a jacket. No pockets to speak of (Riptide Zone), but that's what the D-rings are for. I carry a mesh bag just in case I find something cool to carry...

Suit thickness for 19-23 C water?

I've been wearing a 5/4 Pinnacle with Merino wool lining in southern Okinawa, Japan and the water temp here has been about the same since November. It's perfect for that temperature range. I also wear a 1.5 mil hood, which I think is absolutely necessary--makes a huge difference for the second...
