It's 2022. Who doesn't have credit card text alerts?

You would be surprised. I’ve told a number of people about them who didn’t even know they existed. There are a lot of barely tech literate folks walking around.

For that reason I never sign the backs of my cards, not sure if it would help if I were ever to lose the card.

I write see ID on mine........ you can count on one hand with leftover fingers the number of times I've been asked.

I use Apple Pay whenever possible. Another layer between the merchant and my cards.

I think the main point here is be careful when buying new-used high value stuff, at the vary least if it’s discovered to be stolen you’ll be out the $

I do have a card through one provider - Barclay's - that I would say hits me with a hold so often for fraud either online or in person purchases >$250 it's annoying. Guess I should be grateful as I have never had an issue with a charge I didn't approve. Different card providers seem to have different levels of internal fraud prevention.

One dive shop owner’s post indicated that when they contacted Shearwater, they found out Shearwater had been aware of this crime ring for a while and did nothing to notify their dealers.

I learned on deployment to notify the card companies before overseas travel. Both credit cards and my debit card got shut down because they thought someone was touring Europe with them.

I don’t know about overseas travel but I used to notify Chase when I was going to be away domestically. That’s not even an option anymore. They have other fraud protections in place now.

Here is a link to a WI dive shop owner’s FB post that has a lot more info in the comments. There’s a ton of info there and it would be too many screenshots.
