Yes it's true we can do it that way if we want to. The plan was to discourage as many as possible but no matter what some will still go. The government can't totally stop us from traveling because it would violate the Charter of Rights and Freedom. If you've got the money & the time after the trip some will still go just like the thousands who flew to Florida or Arizona like they do every winter.

One must really want to travel if they deem it worth a mandatory hotel quarantine and $2000 bill upon return.

Not to mention the risk of your own and/or your family's death, and (perish the thought) at least some consideration for the countless others who might be taken by the pandemic as you spread it....that might be a consideration, too. But obviously, not so much to actually dissuade people.

Gotta have those pictures to post on Instagram I guess.

Here is an example of the mindset that is continuing to prolong/exacerbate the pandemic here in the US.

I work for an engineering firm in PA. The governor has mandated telework here unless impossible as well as wearing masks indoors. We have been working from home for the most part since December.

Last week the owners walked through the office and saw that no one was here. They through a fit because, in their mind, everyone is 16 yrs old and can't be trusted to work from home responsibly, even though we haven't missed a deadline/deliverable yet. Starting today, everyone is required to be in the office. In addition, the owners consider wearing a mask is a personal choice and not mandatory. As for the gov't mandate, their position is "We don't care. We'll just pay the fine."

So I have the choice of putting my life, as well as others, at risk or losing my job.

It's time for your businesses & many of the "we're loosing our freedom" fighters to realize this is a major health problem world wide & not some kind of government conspiracy designed to take away our freedom. Every country in the world is in this mess & until a very large part of the world's population has been vaccinated this isn't going to be under control.Fortunately Canada's governments (Federal & Provincial) have made it crystal clear that if a worker can work from home they need to. My stepdaughter is doing that & has for months but her new boss (bought the business a few months ago) wanted staff back in the office. The employees have a safety committee which reminded him the office didn't meet the current guidelines & they were staying home. Nothing he could do including firing them which the government has made clear isn't acceptable practice.
Re Canadians bypassing the new travel restrictions the morning news is reporting that Ottawa & Washington are working to plug that loophole. Neither administration wants the new variants flying back & forth between countries.

Sorry to hear that you have been placed in this position. Sadly, this attitude is probably more widespread globally than we realize.

What did you choose?

Lucky for you, companies are hiring engineers right now. There's 5,286 engineer jobs listed for Pittsburgh, PA alone (monster).

Except you may want to consider that while this health crisis will pass, but any rights lost rarely do come back completely.

And I don't believe it is a government conspiracy, just that once a precedent is set, it is rarely reversed. So the proper process isn't to trample on rights. If they can't prohibit travel as it is a right, they shouldn't be able to unduly burden it either.

Back to the original topic...Have people traveling to Mexico/Caribbean caused a lot of infections in Canada? Has the government done the same restrictions for domestic travel?

Why only warm weather vacation destinations?

I've said it before, I went to COZ in late August. I felt much safes going there than the WalMart in town.

Is this decision based on science? If so, why is the science different for domestic travel?

Canada (Toronto specifically) is having huge COVID issues. Population density, and mobility... Add an international airport, and is gets even worse... They are in shutdown / lockdown to try and stop it.

toronto covid update - Google Search

I am sitting on 3 Air Canada tickets to Curacao I can't use as I can't get into Canada to fly out..
