Bonus points if you can find any data on the old PSI "Steel 96" tanks. Some of us still ride these unicorns. DOT 3AA 3000psi and + rated, so presumably the 96 (I think it was sold as 96.2 or something) is with the 10% overfill, which is now problematic because there are apparently no records of what the tank actually was and is. Vintage 80's or early 90's and possibly the granddaddy of all steel hp tanks.

For whatever reason, you're trying to "quote" and are using "next" instead, so it doesn't show. I'm not familiar with that argument or how you got it. What did you press? I edited out the one and will edit out the others so it will be the quote argument rather than this one and then you can see it.

FWIW, I used the code argument so you could see the "next" arguments in situ.

Oooo.... Nice find! Spreadsheet and PDF updated (and the typo mentioned way early above) and attached, with text dump of PDF below.

This illustrates two points that many have said above:

A. "Tank X *is* Tank Y". If you look at the specs, *some* of the tanks (e.g. OMS and Faber) do share *some* of the characteristics. Yet some tanks that share certain key items (like water volume and tank weight) do *not* match other closely-related elements (like full capacity).

B. "Specs may or not may actually match what the actual tanks are at any given moment." Given that we *know* that at least some of the OMS tanks were made by Faber, and it's unlikely that OMS would have Faber change their manufacturing process, they *should* match. But they don't. And tanks with identical water volumes do not share identical gas capacities at full. So what good are the specs in the first place? :)

So. Take this list with a grain of salt. It's only as good as what the manufacturers tell us, and it seems that they're not above... 'creative' specs. Who knows where the truth lies? But at least this list is *traceable*: we know it's from the manufacturer. For what little good that may actually be! :)

Like I said, creating this spreadsheet was for me an exercise in really understanding the wide range of tanks and their characteristics. In the end, I found that the factors that I cared the most about were *amazingly* similar across a pretty broad range of tanks. So I relaxed, exhaled, and moved on.

Mods: would you mind replacing the items attached in Post #1 with these? Or at least add a note on the end that mentions that there's updates at this post number? Might as well keep those up to date, too... Thank you!

Hey tmassey, great work. Whatever the comments are, I completely understand and agree about your point to use manufacturer specs (or other reliable sources). Here in Europe we always specify a scuba tank by its internal volume (in l). That makes gas calculations much easier (in my opinion).

@those divers who are discussing about negative-positive buoyancy: The difference in weight between "full" and "empty" is exactly the same for all tanks with similar internal volume, hence I do not recognize any advantage or disadvantage under water.

@tmassey: There is something wrong with the Metal Impact S100. The difference between full and empty is only 2.70 lbs compared to 7.4 lbs for the other two S100. There is a minus at the empty buoyancy that probably is an error. Also the water volume of this cylinder cannot be correct. I know that this is the manufacturers specification but have a look at the two other S100 cylinders. According to the specification the Luxfer S100 has exactly the same specs (3,300 PSI, 98,80 cu ft), how could the water volume be different by one liter? You can see that there must be something wrong, as the difference from specs column shows.

I have made some mods to your XLS, incuding ISO units and some minor changes to the calculations. What do you think?
