Unfortunately I am currently unemployed since approx. 6 months. Therefore I have no medical insurance, nor can I afford it. However I do need a root canal and a crown. Been living with tooth pain for some time now and taking pain killers. The dentist is just so expensive, he's asking $1500 as a estimate. The X-Ray was already $100 out of my pocket :-( Thank you for all that could help me afford my dental work. Dan

Lol...go to Costa Rica. You'll pay far less and get a vaca out of it.

Or Cozumel. I know at least one guy who waits until his annual dive trip to Cozumel to get dental work done.

He can't afford a crown and you guys are suggesting vacations. That's like telling a guy that needs new tires to buy a new truck because it comes with new tires.

No, it's more like telling the guy he can get tires for 10% of the price if he buys it in another country and brings it back. Except you don't have any import difficulties with a crown like you would for a truck.

Except that's a bad analogy because of the price difference. A crown costs so much that it's still cheaper even including travel costs to get it done out of country. Tires, not so much.

Maybe its just my distance from Mexico but a trip would cost me about twice his estimate for the crown. I can see that it would be cheaper if he lived substantially closer. I hadn't thought of it this way.

In many places there are sliding scale fees available for dental work. My daughter is going to get some done at such a place in the near future. Don't know what might be available in your area, but it could be worth investigating.

I have a friend who needed about $20k worth of dental work. He drives to Brownsville next week to have all of the root canals done, the gold crowns made, and installed. The damage will be about 1500. Way better than insurance.
