I used to log dives using my dive computer logging software. Then 1 day a SW update came out. I ran the update and BAM my entire log got wiped out. Had over 200 dives in there with locations, site names, gear and weight details, etc.. I was so pissed I have not logged any dives since. I am guessing I have around 600 now.

Post a pic of how you log your dive. A favorite perhaps?

Well, OK. Kind'a boring though.

I don't bother logging many dives anymore that can't be downloaded.

I auto-backup online now and learned years ago to NEVER enter data into anything that used a proprietary format... or at least had an complete export function to a widely supported format.

Yeah, lesson learned about doing SW upgrades. But for dive logging, it is no longer a problem because I don't log anymore . Not really a big deal for me. The log was more for pleasure than useful information.

My video camera provides memories of my dives and dive quality. After a dive trip the amount of video footage I have is the best indicator of how good the trip was.

I'm an inveterate paper logger, but I recently gave Subsurface a try and was impressed to see how many different data formats it supported. Before trying electronic logging, I just assumed they all used proprietary formats. I'm still not quite sure how it works with the different formats. Not giving up my paper log just yet.

Wanting to convert over Subsurface before I get too many dives. Right now mine are all in the SSI system. As others have mentioned, I'd like to get away from a proprietary system. If SSI had an export function I'd likely keep using it for a while. As a sometimes journal-er, I really would like a neat hand written paper version.

In my case, neat and hand-written are mutually exclusive... and paper can't beat waving a pointer over a graph and seeing depth, time, and gas consumption at that second.

As a data geek I am 100% in tune with downloading the computer data and having it graph out. No debate at all. I am currently watching all of the "what computer would you all have me buy" threads to weigh pros and cons for my own purchase. But much like a coffee table book of pictures, I think that a paper log book could be fun to occasionally pick up and browse through. This would be in addition to a more accurate online log.
