Be mindful fish may not choose to live equally at all depths. In a coral reef ecosystem, you've got an ecosystem at depth; 30 - 200 feet or so? In a kelp forest, you've got plant production with food & habitat at depth. In a freshwater body...well, I don't think much plant growth happens at depth. If you quarry dive an area with some emergent vegetation around the perimeter, you see quickly that rooted green plants don't extent to all that much depth. I used to dive a shallow quarry that was around 30+ feet deep; it had some plant growth on the bottom, but you need pretty good viz. to sustain that I imagine.

And how much of a thermocline effect is there in the Great Lakes? I ask because if at depth you've got much colder water & less food, why would trout & other fish hang out down there?

In the local quarry I dive occasionally, I see many bluegill, plus some catfish & bass, in the shallows. But at 90 feet deep almost no life, & a dead fish on the bottom looks free from scavenging.

Richard.

There is a thermocline in Lake Michigan and the Salmon and Trout prefer to be beneath it. Warm water equals poor fishing in Lake Michigan. They are also found frequently at recreational dive depths. Lake Trout almost always sit on the bottom at depth in deeper water. They feed on alewife's which are a baitfish.

As for Truuk lagoon, there were a few wreck diving destinations that were on my bucket list once. Truuk, Bikini Atoll and Scapa Flow. Then I realized that I live close to the GREAT LAKES! To me this is the among the top Wreck diving destinations because the age of those wrecks beats anything that Truuk, Bikini and Scapa Flow have to offer. The preservation of those ancient wrecks is so much superior to these recent wrecks that everyone raves about. It made me think that had the Great Lakes been located in some less accessible part of the world with the same shipwrecks in the same preservation level, then as a wreck diving destination it would be ranked much higher than Truuk. Since this is the American and Canadian divers own backyard no one seems to care about them and they are more fascinated by less ancient less preserved wrecks like Truuk fleet.

I am noticing that you are from Marshall Islands and you are dreaming about diving Truuk. Personally I would rank your wrecks in the Bikini Atoll higher than Truuk because there are plenty of world war wrecks all over the world but not a lot of places where you can dive a nuclear bomb site. I am sure you would attach more value to Truuk because Bikini Atoll is your backyard.
Truk Lagoon is more about WWII History and the sobering experience of visiting the scene of an epic naval air raid; Scuba diving on the ships that were sunk in action and imagining how it all literally "went down"; exploring the cargo holds & superstructures full of ordnance, tanks, fighter planes, with AA guns & cannons still pointing skyward; massive torpedo holes in hulls, terrific battle damage of ships blown in half by secondary aviation fuel or ammunition explosions; the crew quarters and the Engine Room spaces where you see gas masks & human remains right beside each other -of heroic but doomed Japanese Seamen under orders to stay at crew stations to the very end. . .

I've visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial where it all began for America (and visited the USS Missouri where WWII ended as well, moored inline on Battleship Row, appropriately near and guarding the shattered hull & tomb of USS Arizona); dived Bikini Atoll on the HIJMS Nagato -the first Battleship designed with 16" guns (capsized but still there mounted intact) and the Flagship where Admiral Yamamoto planned & gave the order to execute the Pearl Harbor Raid; traveled eight thousand miles to Sri Lanka and visited the only dive-able British WWII Aircraft Carrier sunk in action -HMS Hermes- sunk by the same Japanese Fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor; and finally dove the 500' long Oiler IJN Shinkoku Maru befittingly sunk in revenge during the Truk Lagoon Raid --a tanker that sortied with that same Japanese Fleet, eight thousand miles from Pearl Harbor to Ceylon (Sri Lanka), as well as supporting the naval attack at the Battle of Midway.

Now that's a unique common thread and brief overview of a wreck diver's "Bucket List Historical Odyssey", exploring & reliving WWII Indo-Pacific History, and appreciating how the United States came to be the greatest maritime world power it is today. . . (That and also seeing what the Atomic Bombs of the Operation Crossroads Test did to the warships at Bikini Atoll).:shocked2::shocked2:

I dont think he was trying to mislead anyone. An experienced diver stands to gain nothing by claiming to be non-certified. Had it been the other way around (a profile showing more diving experience than the person actually has in real life ) then I would feel cheated.

He is just coming across snarky...I know I have to be careful as I come across that way too at times. Again see his post #84. I am done with it...

I live on Kwajalein. Bikini is not to far but expensive to get there. I would like to dive Bikini some day as I love history. But for right now I have 100+ wrecks in the Kwaj Atoll I can dive and they are keeping me busy. :)
Truk interests me again for the history...that and I can get there for about 12000 air miles.

You've got Prinz Eugen right there at Kwajalein, Oldbear! And the most active ( and exclusive!) recreational Scuba Club in the Pacific:

Yes I do and I love diving it. I also love our club and am quite active in it. We average 800 tanks per month.

I know that I have said it before but I will always be grateful to you. Had I not read a post on SB that you wrote and mentioned Kwaj three years ago I might have never learned about Kwaj and still be diving lakes in Colorado and a vacation diver...or returned to the Middle East...and be an expat vacation diver.

I still have a bucket list. :D

We get so much out of SB through the members don't we? I am always grateful for the awesome People and information I have found through SB :clapping:

I am fortunate to have finished my bucket list. No time to start a new one but I'm satisfied and happy.

This is the first time I am hearing someone say that they have already done their list. What was that list if I may ask? What would you recommend from that list?

I have the goal to do a combo trip to Africa, land-based to a wildlife park and then diving. Would love to see elephants in the wild before poachers kill them all with cyanide.

Closer to home, have yet to dive a centoe in Mexico and would love to dive Banco Chinchorro.

Tubbattaha is on the list.

And Indonesia or PNG, but how do you choose...? ; > )
