Nope, he ended up charging me the full freight. I could have had a fit and started screaming profanities at the driver in front of the airport, but it was my fault for not negotiating it in advance.

Yeah, we had a similar thing happen- we shared a cab with a couple from Centro to the Presidente and then continued on to our hotel. The one guy in the group (who speaks decent Spanish, and negotiated in English and Spanish) thought he had the rate quoted to split between us, but was apparently wrong. He charged them full rate to the Presidente, and then us full rate from Centro to Sabor. We would have saved money by getting out at the Presidente and then hoping into one of the many cabs waiting there... The only reason I wasn't pissed off was because it saved us having to hail two cabs on the street- which weren't really readily available.

Are the taxi's considerably less pricier than the Vans?

Have you ever been packed in the middle of the back seat while a van made multiple stops on the way to your hotel? And sometimes your bag gets off early...!!

I guess it is relative. It would be for us, as we are close to the airport. I wonder if since the taxis are up in arms about the water taxis, the van guys decided to get up in arms about the taxis at the airport?

Some of these taxi stories are appalling, supporting the idea that they will do what they can get away with at times. I did share a cab from the hotel to the airport with two friends who had vouchers last time and did not get charged, so I avoided that argument. Those vouchers are so overpriced to start with.

This forum gives Cozumel divers the reputation of being very cheap travelers. Some of the discussions over pennies on here is funny. When I go on vacation like playa last winter I paid an escalade to take us down. Had corona and tequila on board waiting. Thats what I call a good deal....

When I went to coz the first time, I was not aware of the voucher system. I walked outside to the first van that looked full and asked the driver if he had room for two more as I offered him a couple of $5 bills. He said sure, took the bills and off we went. That's how I have been doing it since. YMMV.
I sometimes rent from blueway, right across the street from the airport if I am going to have a car for the week. I have had no problems with them and used them on the mainland for a week trip to xcalack, also no problems. But watch out for the guys at the pemex stations, they pull some crap every time. I now just fill up after using only 1/4 tank so the amount is small and I have fewer issues.

As long as the taxis are picking up passengers off airport property, I don't understand what the police have to do with it. Are they saying it's illegal to walk off airport property and get a cab on a public street?

The problem is the turf war between the shuttles and the cabs, resulting in a stupid rule to begin with. So a few people (like me) get around the stupid rule by walking a few hundred yards.

Then again, the whole issue of public transportation in Cozumel is a sore subject to me. I like the cabbies, but there is zero doubt in my mind that a bus or trolley system from the cruise ship pier to downtown would be greatly beneficial to the island.

On our last trip in November my hubby & I had 7 bags total - 2 dive bags + 3 suitcases bringing down stuff to leave for our move in January + two 21" carry-on rollies. We were going to pay the drive a bigger tip for the extra suitcases but noooo....they made us go back in and buy a 3rd ticket. OK it was only $96 pesos but this is money we would have given straight to the driver. The supervisor-type person said the limit was 3 bags per person.

Then on top of all that...they squeezed in another person in the back row with us. I was like "Hey wait a minute. I paid for 3 seats so I should get 3 seats". LOL Thank godness we were only going to SCC so we were 2nd to be dropped off.

Now we are coming for good in January with 3 people and lots of luggage. 6 large suitcases + 6 carry-ons of which 2 are our dogs in their soft crates. Hopefully we are the only ones as it is the Air Canada flight coming in Saturday night. We will be first off the plane as we are in Rows 1 & 3 (first class) but I assume we won't be first out of the terminal as we have to have the dogs checked out. I just hope the vans are still there.

Anyone out there have a large van or SUV that could pick us up for a good price?

Cause the policeman is married to the sister of one of the van drivers. Just thinking outside the burrito...

Very funny Mike. I didn't want to wait and fly economy a week later and hubby used AMEX points. Plus it is only one way. LOL

I'd pay the same $300 pesos but rather give it to someone other than the van guys who may hassle us again for more
