Any fossilers wanna show off some photos?

I am gonna post up some pathetic little teeth, in horrible condition. I will then clean them and post up the results. I am gonna use an "air eraser" containing aluminum oxide. I like the alum oxide (it works well), but the air eraser is WAY to small for my tastes. I will then use polishing compound in conjunction with the buffing wheel.

whoops... how did a photo of my 2011 Mastodon get in this bunch... ... (its neutralizing in baking soda after an acid bath, ain't she pretty)

here is a 2011 tooth i cleaned last year. small but maybe the prettiest tooth i have ever found

the river took my claw from me this past dive. i really liked the garden tool Vincent was using. I found it online. its called a potato rake

little Hubble is from Venice. bunch of teeth on the wooden cutting board are from a river in GA (Note the 2.9" Mako on the lower left). brown teeth are from the NC meg ledge. Nice GW are from NC.

Oh yeah, that giant 15 pound chunk of bone is a small fragment of a whale skull from NC.

yeah man. rick you have some nice un's. there are a couple in your bunch that are stunning beauties. some of them look like MEG Ledge teeth. Some don't. Couple of real eye catchers. those will really help fill out any fossilers collection... tks for posting... enjoyed em

i just now saw your posting about the specimens on the wooden board. i thought those looked like Savannah teeth. Hard to beat the produce from the Savannah area

Well, I sure hope so and this may have already be said in the past by others and if so I apologize in advance but Vinson and I were talking about the film that is left on teeth in some rivers. We have coined the phrase "River Plaque". Just like how our teeth build up plaque, the river does the same, lol

Hey Rick, I hate to break this to ya buddy, but those "Mako" teeth are all fakes. Hey it happens, you know, millions of years ago when sharks were swimming around, some of them would actually have a mouth full of fake teeth, and because I am such a cool guy......I'll take all those fake Mako teeth so you will not have to look at how ugly they are next to those nice megs you got, lol

I have a couple of 3" Mako teeth in my collection and I am really hoping to add to it once I get down to Savannah. One thing I really want to add to my Mako collection is a 3"+ lower tooth.


On a side note, today is my last day of working for Boeing in Charleston. I am looking forward to starting a new chapter of my life back in Savannah, and who knows, I just may be back up here in Charleston again.


Lee, I have used a brass wire wheel on my dremel and a buffing round pad on my dremel with great success. The buffing wheel/pad looks like the same material as a scotchbrite pad and there are three different colors I have seen, a red, a brown, and a black. They all work pretty good.

Well, wouldn't you know it! Man, I'll tell you when I found that tooth, absolute 0 viz., I thought it was a small meg! I was pulling teeth out of my bag, my wet suit, my BC pockets,... and I said "here's another small meg." I can't tell you how disappointed I was when it was pointed out that my small worn meg was actually the biggest Mako I have ever found!

I am all for hunting teeth but getting them from the source is asking too much. Would need a heck of a long potato rake.

made some head way on cleaning this old river tooth covered with river plaque. i am convinced the aluminum oxide is a very good material to use in the air spraying process. i definitely need a larger sprayer. i left some of the plaque on the tooth so you can see the difference.
