I am cleaning some fossils today. Still working on my Mastodon with vinegar, baking soda, toothbrush, and water. I am fascinated with how quickly some fossils soak up water. Wire brushes and the buffer just did not seem to be the best path for the Mastodon tooth.

Gonna spray the two small ones with more aluminum oxide, then a vinegar scrub, then polishing compound and the buffer. I put the polishing compound directly on the tooth. The color of the compound has an effect on the final product.

found condition / sprayed alum oxide / buffed with white polishing compound

polished without cleaning / alum oxide sprayed / polished after cleaning

found this clip on u-tube. this is what i am currently using to remove "river plaque" from small sharks teeth. will be on the look out for something faster.

here is what i had in mind when i purchased my little sprayer. this sprayer ROCKS. this sprayer will CLEAN SOME SHARKS TEETH. jump ahead to the 5:50 minute mark if you wanna see some action

So, anybody going to the Venice Shark Tooth Festival this weekend?

not going. every time i go to Venice I arrive back home $1000 lighter. I enjoy the diving there. Whether you find anything or not the dives are super easy and pleasurable. Plus I have a good friend in Fossilbabe and I always enjoy visiting with her. I may take a week off later on in the season and visit Venice for a week. Do some land hunts, visit the Peace river and Shark tooth creek. Maybe even dive the Suwanee. I plan to do some more diving here in South Carolina first. Bought a new mask and a potato rake for raking up some old sharks teeth. Cut the handle down to about 3 feet.

Isn't it the Auriculatus tooth that stands on its root?

i,ve heard conflicting statements on the teeth in question. May be tooth placement, i,ve always gone by if it can stand it was Auriculatus. At any rate I,ll take one by any name! Here are pictures of my version of Mike,s diving helmet with dive lights.100_2500.jpg

i like the new head mounted lighting system Phil.

ps: save me a seat next time you go fossil diving. gear packed. on hot stand by.
