All in all I had a wonderful trip and despite some problems don't feel I need to warn people against travelling on MV Ondina.

bugeye, thanks for this. Paul is also sending emails and I suppose PM's to people smearing the ship, the CD/DM's, owners, etc. I received one at an old address I used to use on some websites. He writes "I am going onto every single dive forum I can find and I am tarnishing the Ondina’s name".

For sure a wooden boat in rough weather and rain will leak. As the ship twists over the waves, seals can break and must be repaired.

I heard that one new compressor is already installed and the other 2 repaired. The dive operators do seem to help each other overcome problems. We've rented a speedboat from the resort to take a diver to Sorong, given fuel, beer and break to another ship that ran out (I'm still miffed about beers.. we ran low on the last night of our trip and I had to forgo mine!).

I've already commented on your video, before I realized your trip was with Ondina. It inspired me to start to work on mine from the last trip.

I really wish Paul had started his own thread then all of this would be in one place. Now its all over the show!!!

I can quite imagine Paul is ticked off with the cruise. Those are some fairly serious issues. And he has a right to voice his opionions, but he seems to be taking it just a tad too far. He seems to be focussing on all the negatives when I can quite imagine there were plenty of positives as Bugeye has pointed out. As can be seen from your vid Bugeye the diving was incredible and Paul can not deny that!

Do not envy you on those two days of bad weather! That is not fun.

Bugeye thanks for the second point of view on the trip.

Dear buddies, I write as the SMY Ondina representative. Inmediately after being aware of the events that happen during this cruise I was in contact with the agents who brought the guests on board and had also a long thread of post in our facebook page which far from us deleting it we are leaving it in our wall to show that we have nothing to hide but accept there were some problems during that certain cruise which have been, or are being or already were solved during the cruise. You can see the posts at: SMY Ondina - Dive Indonesia | Facebook .
Unfortunately the level of the language and accusations from Mr. Paul Morton have gone to a point which forced us to clarify some important points. Let me stress some of the points I mention to Mr. Morton in his communications and post.
The SMY Ondina is one of the pioneer boats in the Rajah Ampat area, we have collaborated actively in all mooring buoys campaigns, we have sponsored meetings of the Rajah Ampat authorities on board several times, we are active members of the Gahawishri organisation in Indonesia, we have already payed the annual fee for operating in Rajah Ampat, we actively collaborate in all conservation activities in Rajah Ampat and Komodo....etc.etc.
More than eleven years operating in the inner seas of Indonesia, the high percentage of repeaters we have and the nice comments in many blogs and forums are not from misled but from satisfied buddies who had a good time cruising and diving with the SMY Ondina.
I thank Mr. Morton for his complaints as they will force us to continue improving even harder for those future customers we will be committed with to provide a great diving holiday as we have done for so many years till now.
Like every other traditional wooden boat in the world we are not perfect and we sometimes have not perfect cruises. What we cannot cope with in any way is to allow that someone spreads plain lies or rumours or unfair guesses about us operating illegally which harm our operation and damage the image of our crew and Divemasters who worked hard to provide the best stay possible onboard to our guests or comments that let our repeaters as silly blokes who do not know what they do.

YES, we did have the two compressors broken during the cruise, something that has happened for the first time in ELEVEN years opertaing. We have already placed a brand new one on board and are repairing the other two. YES we had some bad air filling and we are solving it already with additional filters.(We have addressed all agencies and guests on that cruise to inform them that we will care for any service in their regulators and during the trip all guests were offered Free Nitrox) YES we refill our semirigid inflatable dinghies everyday, for many reasons long to explain here but everybody must know that we change the inflatable parts often and that we will do it again in the next coming dry dock. YES we did have leaks a couple of days in a couple of cabins but only due to terrible weather with rain and waves for several days. The cabins are equipped with an antileaking system that just was not enough this time but it has been on so many other cruises.
And now, NO we did not provide with bad food at all as the other guests who have posted could confirm, NO our DMs do not disappear when diving, NO we do not operate illegally, on the other hand, we stand first in protecting the beautiful reefs in Indonesia, NO we do not poorly maintain our boat, we are not a luxury boat but we provide a very good standard where we value homestay atmosphere and the traditional look in our boat.
There are excellent colleagues operating in Rajah Ampat and we all help us each other, that is why we solved the compressors problem we had in this cruise in just half a day. I hope you understand that this means something and tells something about us as a reputed operation.
We hope we can continue providing great diving experiences in those blessed areas we cover with our cruises to all buddies who decide to honour SMY Ondina in the future.
Best dives to all of you!
Enrique
SMY Ondina
BTW: we have just finished another cruise right after the one with "so many" problems and everything went fine and all our guests had a great time. Now we are heading to Cenderawasih bay, where we are going to be one the pioneers again, for diving with the amazing whalesharks in Nabire!

The way this guy did things was really stupid and bringing up threads which had nothing to do with this and of course some things did go wrong on this trip, some serious, these things can happen. But does not mean that the owner is bad as it can happen.

These trips are expensive as we know and sure the SMY Ondina gave those on board a discount on any future trip as a goodwill gesture.

Regarding going to Cenderawasih bay as pioneers diving with whalesharks, thats not really correct.AHE iSLAND a total conservation and eco tourism project involving the locals and community and with the marine park protecting this area and whalesharks and been diving with the whalesharks most days as well as study for nearly 2 years and all profit from diving guests going back into the community.

What would be interesting, now that liveaboards are starting to visit this area.A liveaboard like SMY Ondina what do they contribute out of their profit to the local community which this involves in the protection of this area.

Hi TWIME, You are right with Ahe resort, actually Dr. Mark Erdmann has been involved in those studies and our operations manager, Ricard Buxo has been in contact with him to gather information and for offering collaboration for their work. As you can see I said "one of the pioneers", we know we are not going to be the first but one the very few starting to operate the Bay and finding its diving potential. The Bay looks promising, there are also the wrecks near Manokwari and the huge hard coral gardens but apart from that few reports talk about diving around the islands of Biak or Yapen where we want to explore in this trips. The way we are collaborating with the local population is through the Annual Fee we pay and through mooring buoys and free transport for NGOs or scientific organisations material and staff.Of course each of the divers do it through the personal diving tag a percentage of which goes directly to the local communities in the region.
In Nabire region we also pay directly the local fishermen who make their living with their fishing platforms where the whalesharks feed so that they accept divers and liveaboards as a welcome visit and prevent so many bad stories that happen in Triton Bay area for example.
Thanks again, this kind of comments are really worthy and knowing how the diving industry can help conservation and bring some help to local communities can encourage not only other people to dive but to do it more consciously and help in stopping sharkfinning and bomb fishing.
Best dives!

now that liveaboards are starting to visit this area

Starting? I dived Cenderawasih, Biak, Mapia, Yapen in 1990 from a liveaboard. My first liveaboard in Indonesia! We didn't have GPS data for all the dive sites then, I only have the photos. Nikonos V. Whalesharks were, I think, undiscovered then.

I just looked for my report on the wreck in Dore Bay (Manokwari) and surrounding area. Realized it was on a website I built for a dive operation in 2000 that is offline now.

Anyone else been to those areas long ago? From time to time I run into a diver who was there.. but not many.

You should know what i mean then, this area you mentioned has been dived for some time and exploration and as you mention in 90's and been around there mysefl.

The protected area and marine park and whalesharks is in the south west of the bay and with the various local communities being involved. This is where LOB'S are starting to do trips in big numbers now and there will be some surprises for LOB'S and guests if things are not done right in this area and again what will these LOB'S contribute to the protection of this area and local community, this is a big concern and the effect all the LOB'S will have on the whalesharks and at Ahe Island where you can stay and see whalesharks in a controlled manner and knowing everything generated profit wise going back into the local communties.

I believe you will be operating in this area,so it would be interesting to know what you will be contributing to the conservation project and locals in this area as this is a concern in the area now that more LOB'S coming in making a lot of money and giving little in return and worse the example of Michael Aw and others involved in that trip last year including national geographic.

@SMY Ondina some good stuff to find in north, wrecks and around Yapen,(seeing the rain forest above Yapen is stunning) and Mapia good luck and in the south in the marine park and the whalesharks and good you have been in touch with Dr. Mark Erdmann who will also advise you on controlled interaction with them and from all my information in this area SMY Ondina has a lot of good things said about,so forget about one problem week.

Hi TWIME and photog, Do not misunderstand me, we do not want to wear false medals. When I say "starting" I mean in a scheduled way. I myself was in Biak trekking and diving late 80s when there was not a single diveresort in the islands around. At that time we were looking for a nice place for a resort. At that time our master in the LOB's world, the Pindito, was exploring every single inch of the Banda Sea and all the rest of the seas around. What a great pioneer!. But many of those places have never been in any fix schedule of any running LOB. The controversy between tourism, enviroment and local communities is something that all the operators in the Gahawishri organisation in Indonesia and all defenders of Nature worldwide are involved. It is true that when a certain area starts being visited by LOBs in a steady way, at the end of the day, the local communities are benefited specially in health and education. On the other hand there is always some point when tourism starts affecting the enviroment......Very difficult indeed!
We would be very much interested and thankful to read your reccomendations and comments about the Cenderawasih Bay diving. You seem to have been a pioneer in many places in Indonesia! Best dives!

Hi AlMitch, Thanks so much for your fair comment. Just let me quote a couple of sentences from other guests in the same cruise than Paul and also let me ask you to read our post about Paul's comments.
The quotes from other guests: 1.- "....On a separate note, that despite the compressor problems i had a wonderful time aboard, and all the crew were absolutely lovely and very professional. Hopefully i'll be repeating the trip next year, so i think i'll be taking you up on the discount......"
2.- " ......Can you book me for the two following komodo cruises?....."
3.- "...Apart from the above (referring to the diving tags issue wich has been explained and it is now fully clear) and the compressor and leak incidences, overall me & my friends had a great time and the crew was wonderful especially the food! That kept us all really happy. The diving needless to say was stellar(despite the not so perfect weather conditions) We are also appreciative of the complimentary nitrox to make up for the compresser etc. I will let the group know about your special return conditions offer!

Hope to have you onboard sometime in the future......not always bad weather and bad luck happens together or even separately!
Best dives!
BTW: The Indo Siren is a great boat indeed!

Im just reading back on this post - was paul morton's post removed?

Also photog - that pdf you posted with all the actual names of the divers on the Ondina? Isnt that beyond privacy protection?
