I was going to say "cool", but apparently cool doesn't qualify as a reply. So instead I will say "amazing".

I'm sure the law of unintended consequences will be hard at work. All the marine protected areas being set up by Coastal will provide an abundant food source for the juvenile white sharks. More predators will dine on the marine life being protected by Coastal. Then white sharks will be hunted because the water isn't safe any more. Brilliant!!

You're kidding, right?

Very cool! Thanks for posting that.

These "Shark Men" are the ones who use the large hooks to capture GWS, tire them out, drag them on a platform that raises them out of the ocean (putting stress on their internal organs), bolt a radiotransmitting "tag" to their dorsal fin and release them. They are the ones accused of causing serious damage to at least one, possibly two, of the GWS in the Farallons Reserve.

While the information they obtain may have some scientific value (it does duplicate existing efforts, although Domeier has been actively tagging GWS for a number of years... I was on one of his scientific trips to Guadalupe in 2005 where he used a much less intrusive method), the effort seems largely focused on creating TV ratings and I'm sad that National Geographic is a participant in it.

Bungled Shark Tagging Leads to Infighting - Santa Cruz News

I am not any either side as I just don't have enough knowledge, but couldn't a shark bite a boat motor as they throw it in gear causing a serious injury to the shark? I bet there is no way a fisherman would report cutting a shark up with his prop out of fear for being at the least, ticketed.

No matter what though the more we learn about Great White sharks the better. It is interesting that they are pupping off of Malibu, yet they do not have many biting incidents hardly down there. I always thought it was the juveniles you had to watch out for.

I saw the episode last week in the Farallon's which Dr. Bill alludes - it's the only episode I've ever seen. To say the least, I found it disturbing - a mixture of MTV, "perceived" drama and what looked like possible injury to the sharks themselves. It reminded me more of "The Deadliest Catch" and I was also surprised NatGeo was behind it.

Good science is a good thing, but not at the expense of hurting, maiming or even killing your subject.
