Used these for the 1st time today, before today I used Scubapro's Twin Jet Max.

Jet fins really kick up the bottom worse than if I did the worm on ground, no wonder you need to frog kick. With my twin jet max splits I can flutter kick very nice an inch above deck and leave only bubbles, but two feet over the deck you can still see where I was with Jets.

What happened between 1965 and today, maybe some engineering and applied science.

I also found frog kick and helicopter turn better with twin jet max than I could with jets.

Jets are flippers, splits are fins.

you can kick faster in jets if you have the leg power... Reason the military uses them
There is a learning curve if you're used to flutter kicking, but they do turn much better and much better frog kicks... I don't go anywhere with twin jets when I've had to use them for frog kicking
Too floppy

As far as fins vs. flippers, I think there is a reason almost all of the animals in nature have flippers comparable to jets vs fins. Big powerful solid blades that are designed to maximize cruising speed, acceleration, and maneuverability. The split fins are designed to minimize kicking energy in flutter kick. They do that, but with a serious compromise in acceleration and overall maneuverability.

How's your back kick in splits? Ever get cave line caught in them?

In other words, horses for courses

If you prefer splits after your extensive testing, and like flutter kicking, then go nuts

Nonsense.

It very much depends on your particular ratio of fast-twitch / slow-twitch fibers. Add to that, proper execution of either (very different) fin.

Total BS.

I'm not sure why your post is so contentious? If you like the splits better, and if they silt less for you, then I would say go ahead and use them. I like my "solid" fins but that doesn't mean I would make a snide post about splits.

(I take it "flippers" are bad and "fins" are good?)

It's obvious then, that fins are for moving fins, and flippers are for moving

you.

But to get the most out of flippers you

must also have these.

Wow!!! One time user of the Jets & absolute negativeness. Sorry they didn't work for you but that is why so many styles on the market. 46 years on the market can't be all wrong.

I'm sorry, but after six years of diving in Puget Sound, I simply don't buy that you can flutter kick in splits a couple of inches above a silty bottom and not disturb it. You can't flutter kick in ANYTHING close to the bottom and not disturb it; you CAN do a modified flutter with bent legs and leave the visibility unchanged, and you can do that in splits as well as in paddle fins.

I have done all the kicks in both types of fins, and it is my personal opinion that paddle fins are far better for helicopter and back kicking. You can frog kick in splits, but it's inefficient, because the soft "flaps" of the fin do not stay in one plane during the loading phase.

Thanks for your exhaustive testing and detailed analysis. I wonder if you have the time to test and evaluate a Spare Air and settle an argument for me?
