I'm just waiting on the Farm Animal Stupid to come out...

...So what's wrong with them recommending it to others?....Telling someone to "get a BP/W" does not translate into DIR ...
That's where the problem comes in. People who come here and don't know the players, make assumptions, often erroneous.

In their mind BPW does equal DIR.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with offering up recommendations and in fact should be encouraged but like I said, the perception is that many of those recommendations come from a single DIR POV. Most of us know it is not true but still, it happens.

SB staff who have been here 5+ yrs should know better than to equate BP/W as being DIR.
We do.
Then again some SB staff are the worst at feeling offended by recreational equipment recommendations which also happen to be something a DIR diver might do/choose.
Speaking only for myself, it's not the recommendations that offend me, it's how that recommendation is delivered. "If you have to ask, need or want to use product X then your diving skills must suck."

I confess I'm often guilty of conflating techies in general with DIR adherents and jumping on them here on SB, usually knowingly so. I simply enjoy stirring the pot, because I take some twisted joy in doing so. :devil3:

But I promise to be more restrained in the future because 1) newbies on the board don't always get the "inside jokes" and prodding and thus get confused thinking there's more conflict than there really is, but more importantly 2) *most* of the actual DIR practitioners - and techies in general - I know from this board are actually NOT preachy or pushy at all and are, in fact, extremely helpful individuals; and finally, 3) honestly, it's not really that challenging to get them all riled up. :whistling:

However, I will continue to be vigilant for the kind of background attitude that still insinuates itself too often here on SB, things like the assumption that "all or most recreational divers will eventually become tech divers", or that "serious divers = technical divers", or "team diving is superior to solo diving", and so forth. Even generous divers sometimes slip into these modes, and IMO those attitudes should be countered and balanced in the general forums.

I feel there is a disproportionate number of vocal techies here on SB - which is not at all a bad thing, since they so often have such rich experiences and perspectives to share - but IMO that often makes it all the more important that us rec-only folks, representing the vast majority of actual divers, speak our minds as well.
