Independent doubles is how I did doubles before manifolds. The reasoning was to have you comfortable with a setup that is adaptable to any situation.
We used bands, long tank straps, aluminum square tubing, welded chain links and all kind of contraptions. ...
My first independent doubles used old-school galvanized (?) doubles bands (the ones that were built for the old US Divers and Scubapro plastic blow-molded backpacks, built with that little welded-on "arch" meant to mate with the curve molded into those backpacks) that I happened upon in the used gear box in a LDS.

I mounted the bands on a couple of 7.25" cylinders, attached them to my Scubapro SSJ (the 1987, orange, taco pocket model), and spent a few minutes "playing" in the rise pool of a local freshwater spring (Roubidoux Spring - Wikipedia). This was only a few weeks after I had completed my NACD/NSS-CDS Cavern and Basic Cave certs--so, you can guess what happened next...!

Fun times!!
