Perception is everything. People who ask a sincere, gear related question in other forums get the almost automatic "get a BP/W", "use a long hose", "poodle jacket", "split-fin", "ankle weights" response and it is perceived as coming from DIR divers dropping in on the recreational forums giving DIR/technical answers to recreational questions. I know it's not true 100% of the time but each time it does happen the rift grows just a notch wider.

I've been on ScubaBoard a long time ... I know most of the players, if not personally then by reputation. And I can say with some confidence that the majority of the people who promote BP/W on this board are not DIR. They're just people who heard about it, tried it, bought one, and are very enthusiastic about how well it works.

So what's wrong with them recommending it to others?

Telling someone to "get a BP/W" does not translate into DIR ... by far the majority of folks I know personally who wear BP/W have never taken a DIR class. Many, in fact, are dead-set against it.

BP/W advice does not equate to promoting DIR.

That's where the problem comes in. People who come here and don't know the players, make assumptions, often erroneous.

In their mind BPW does equal DIR.

Ditto the long hose and figuring out a way to avoid or drop ankle weights. Tried it, liked it, recommend it regardless of "DIRness" or whether they've taken a GUE or any other "DIR" agency's class.

SB staff who have been here 5+ yrs should know better than to equate BP/W as being DIR. Then again some SB staff are the worst at feeling offended by recreational equipment recommendations which also happen to be something a DIR diver might do/choose.

In response, I'll go back to two of my previous statements:

How much effort do you think that a diver who subscribes to the DIR philosophy should spend trying to convince someone who just doesn't want to get it why it's a good idea?

The other edge to that sword, is that once people start putting more effort into educating about the benefits to people that really just want to argue about it, then they get called zealots.

Where is the upside?

I'll chime in. zero.

that's why i tend to shy away from posting in these threads
