Can someone please explain why any of this is important?

It's the internet. What else would we [-]argue about[/-] discuss? ;)

From Jax - " Sun Tzu had a wonderful way of dealing with the attitude. But first, he made absolutely sure that the correct message was received."

That's a great reference. I re-read Sun Tzu every year or so. Lots of real life strategy to be learned from it.

It's only important if one cares about the reputation of the community and its practices. To some, it is beneath them to discuss anything with non-practitioners.

This discussion reminds me a remark attributed to Winston Churchill.

He supposedly said, "A fanatic is person who won't change his mind and won't change the subject." I like that.

I really like DIR. Yet I think of myself as a moderate on the subject. I think that there can be multiple ways to do things right - depending on the dive conditions.

For example, I was taught that bungeed wings are "bungeed wings of death." Over time, I came to believe that bungeed wings are not death traps.

Let's avoid the name calling. If someone is not diving DIR, then they're not necessarily unsafe divers. We can all have fun.

Oh, good grief. Maybe I'm grumpy from having been up all night, but WHEN did you last (or maybe even EVER) see anybody on this board saying that, because someone isn't diving DIR, they're unsafe? I've seen people say that folks who are diving deep air are unsafe, but that's an opinion held by a lot of people who aren't remotely DIR. I've seen people state that diving deep with inadequate gas reserves is unsafe . . . and I think it is, but again, that has nothing to do with DIR.

I have seen it on ScubaBoard as lately as about 1 month ago. A poster made a wild and flaming post claiming that a person (another poster from this thread) was taking their lives in their hands (word for word "Risk your life if you want......." I believe) by diving with non-GUE trained divers......this was specific to GUE divers only but is still indicative IMO. He was told he was being an idiot and making the rest of them look bad and edited his post to "........".

It may not happen often but there are people out there.

There may be some who feel it's beneath them to discuss with non-practioners. OTOH, there is a contingent that has also gone out of their way to discuss the ideas and philosophy to be repeatedly told by people who have never tried it all the reasons why it won't work for them, or why it's a cult, or that they've had too much kool-aide, etc. etc. etc.

A lot of those people have just given up trying to discuss it with non-DIR folks because it just turns into an exercise in frustration. :banghead:

This skill that some people are missing is the ability to write the :ummhat: off as just that and accept that they may not (or do not) represent all members.
