What are the dangers of fresh water diving?

You know at first I was wondering about this. Idiots in boats aren't exclusive to fresh water after all, but as I think about it, there really are a LOT more morons on the lakes than on the seas. I think the added clean up and boating hazards probably do keep 80% of the boating fools in the fresh water areas.

Either that, or they're just a lot more crowded together on the lakes.

Snapping turtles, water moccasins? My uncle knows a guy who was "noodling" for catfish in Lake Texoma and lost an appendage. I had a neighbor who lost her finger to a turtle when we were little.

Giardiasis in clear mountain water, too.
The man eating boats and jet skis scare me the most, though.

I'm not a microbiologist so can't help you. I got a vibrio infection in my hands in Bonaire a couple of years ago that was a bear to cure. Thought I was going to end up in the hospital!

If we required boating licenses that included a required test on common flags and local laws, we'd have a lot less to worry about both on top of and underneath the water.

I think the big problem is not getting enough spice in your dive. You have salt and stuff to spice your dive up in the ocean and non of that in the lakes.

Also if you die in the sea the animals that eat you will not have to add any salt to make you taste better.

I suppose the word I really should have used would be jerks, (to be polite). It's not usually a matter of education or intelligence, but just being an inconsiderate jackass. When someone has a buoy or a marker out or is at anchor or otherwise recreating in the water, it's just common courtesy not to pull up the buoy, buzz them or cause a big wake in their vicinity. You also keep some distance from buoys both to avoid damage to them and to your boat, (prop fouling).

I don't even need to know the meaning of a particular maritime flag or marker to know not to buzz it at 50 mph. Common sense tells you it's out there to warn you of something.
