I have two more they can have, they suck.

Why - whats wrong with the rubber ones ??

They seem inherently "safer" than the homemade bungee things that won't release the regulator and can choke you if they get caught.

I have not tried either - just trying to understand the risks vs. benefits.

(I am very leery of having anything wrapped around my neck when diving, jumping off of boats etc.) :shocked2:

It may sound scary at first, but it's really a non-issue. A bungie'd necklace is much more likely to accidentally separate from the regulator if you accidentally snag it than it is to drag you by the neck down into the depths :D It's also very easy to just stretch it over your head to remove in case something does happen. Remember, you're in the water, so you're dealing with 5-10 lbs of negative buoyancy and not 60lb of weight topside.

What's more, if you really can't get past that point, you can tie a double-fisherman's knot on the bungie, which makes it functionally identical to the silicone necklace pictured above (the regulator mouthpiece is trapped in a "loop" of bungie rather than zip-tied down, and will pull out just as it would from the silicone ones).

I have the double-fisherman's knot and I can attest to the ease that it comes out. Not so easily that it is problematic but easy enough that if the reg got caught on something it'd pop out. Also super easy to put it back in, underwater, with 5mil gloves. The only real concern would be the loop itself getting snagged on something. The solution? Doesn't have a loop so large that the reg hangs down past your belly :D

Cave Diver -
Thank you for the INFORMATIVE and useful reply.

That is not the setup up that I have seen, which was a bungee with both ends under the mouthpiece tie-wrap.

I'm assuming that the loop will come apart without too much force also.

If somebody put the bungee under the tie wrap then they didn't know what they were doing. The proper configurations are the rubber one shown or bungie/shock-cord/surgical tubing/etc tied with two fishermans knots so that it creates an adjustable loop to go around the reg's mouthpiece. This way you are not wearing a static cord (no stretch) around your neck and the secondary can pull away with little effort, if it gets snagged.

If somebody put the bungee under the tie wrap then they didn't know what they were doing.

With all due respect, this isn't true.

Perhaps you should read: DIR-diver.com - Backup Reg Rigging

Sorry. I did read that site and Peter ??? isn't any training agency, he did the site on his own. He even states that the way he does it is not the way he was trained.

I disagree with the "it can snag and fall out part. My regulator has never come out. Also, there is nooo way it can fall out and you not feel it. First that bungee pulls more than just a light touch, secondly if you were to pull it hard enough to release it you get a "little bit" of a snap against your neck, to say the least.

I will digress. I won't say they didn't know what they were doing, but they were not Doing It Right.

Believe me when I say - Every "DIR" diver I know, configures their backup the same way. All GUE/UTD trained. So, where exactly did you get *your* information?
