Of course, you could choose a training path as outlined by sabbath999, or, you could choose your specialty courses from among Deep, Wreck, Navigation, Search & Recovery, DPV, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Dry Suit... and further your training and experience. These 2 MSD cards would represent very different backgrounds, apparent only to the holder.

Good diving, Craig

I've got all my certs through PADI that PADI offers, but one course that I think every serious diver should take is the NAUI Master Diver course. It is a very good course when taught properly and is well worth the investment.

What exactly is the point of bashing on someone who simply wants to continue their diving. So WHAT if they want to earn their Master Diver Cert! First this board will B***H at people for not wanting to learn and then they B***H because they do! How freakin insane. How exactly is this diver hurting anyone on this board by getting the Master Diver Card? I have met many people who made this a goal and because of the course that they went through are d**m good divers now. How can anyone say that obtaining the cert does not teach you anything and why make someone feel like S**T for wanting to get it???? I simply do not understand!

I hope you continue to do what it is that you want to do and have a great time during every minute of it!

All,

There ought to be a warning not to bring up the topic of PADI MSD on ScubaBoard to avoid the grief. The negative comments are entirely predictable. Might as well suggest using split fins, an integrated 2nd, an AI computer, or anything but a BP&W. A glutton for punishment might also suggest training with any of the major agencies is similar. Not that the threads have a propensity to repeat themselves, repeat themselves...

Good diving, Craig

Hey DOkie,

I'm with you, ScubaBoard can be a tough and opinionated group, often with intolerance toward ideas not in their mainstream of thought. I try, sometimes successfully, to not take it personally.

Good diving, Craig

WOW! CHill out dude. Nobody was coming down on him for getting more training. All they were doing was suggesting he not waste money on a piece of plastic that shows only that you spent money on other courses as well. I have the certs for Master Diver but that 45 bucks is better spent on a good backup light, spring straps, or a new mask. And since you CAN get the card by doing specialties that involve NO DIVES ( I'd be ashamed of that) it really does mean nothing. If they had required dives, skills, and knowledge that actually improved one's dive skills like a few other agencies it might have more meaning or value.

Hopefully this makes it all a bit easier to understand.

Prerequisites:
50 logged dives
Advanced Open Water (or other organization equivalent)
Rescue diver (or other organization equivalent)
5 (PADI ONLY) specialties.

Not taking it personally. Have excess in requirements, but never went the Master Diver route. What I am saying is that it means nothing to YOU but means something to THEM. He/she wasn't asking "should I", they were simply asking what the requirements were.

I don't understand how it can be stated that a diver learns nothing from obtaining their Master Diver Cert. Nitrox does not require dives, but I would recommend it to anyone even if they didn't plan on diving with Nitrox. Peak bouyancy - what is wrong with a diver that is not comfortable in the water taking this course (being in a safe environment with an instructor - rather than hire a DM) to work on that skill? Each and every course that you can take means more time learning about the sport that we all love whether in the water or not. I have met many divers that are proud of that cert. whether anyone else thinks they should be or not - doesn't matter. On their journey, they learned a lot.

I just don't understand how other divers can take something that someone would be proud of and make it into something that they would make them embarrassed of.

Couldn't agree more.

MSD doesn't mean nothing, it means Rescue Diver, 5 specialties, and 50 dives, minimum. This exceeds Rescue Diver alone. If you don't want the card, Rescue Diver is more training and diving than the majority of recreational divers have and a level to be proud of.

Of course, alternative training agencies, including Mr Lap's, often play a role in the comments made on the topic. It's a competitive world out there.

Good diving to all, Craig
