Its not just doing a dive that makes it towards the rating..You have to complete 5 speciality courses, not dives, along with advance and rescue. There are classroom sessions, knowledge reviews(homeworks) and some have exams to complete for each individual speciality course. Each speciality has its own requiremments for knowledge development, and perhaps for pool and ow dives to be done.

Ok so your Advanced dives count towards specialities then? So does this mean you did eight AOW dives? I thought it was just five?

With your list I can see the others would help you with certain things (getting deeper dives on charters, learning rescue skills) but Master diver does none of that and does not require anything other than you paying for the card.

The five single dive specialties I did for Advanced years ago count towards my total for Master. I actually have seven specialties that I've logged with instructors and handed in the study guides to go in my folder. I forgot to mention Boat specialty earlier. The whole reason I was asking how many dives were required of each specialty for Master was to figure out the quickest and cheapest rout to completing it this year, given the dives I've already done. I plan to continue taking specialties after I get Master anyway.

What's wrong with trying to learn more and sharpen your skills? I might actually make the switch to Padi professional some day as well.....

Continuing your training can teach you a lot that will make you a better diver and make each dive more fun. The one thing I don't understand is why Peak Performance Bouyancy isn't a required specialty??? In my opinion, it's the first thing that should be taught to anyone wanting to even get advanced!

Nothing at all. However, Master Diver card does not teach you anything extra or sharpen your skills. You do the specialties, dives and rescue. You do not need to buy the "Master Diver" card then as you do not have to do any more skills or dives, it's just buying a card to summarise the other things that you have already done. So, I don't see the point if learning is your goal.

A little clarification. For AOW you don't do Specialty Dives, they are Adventure Dives. If you do the chapter in the AOW Book (titled "Adventures in Diving") and then complete the required single dive that dive can count at the first of the required dives to earn the Specialty.

The Specialty requires a PADI Crewpak in most cases and the additional dives in addition to the Knowledge Reviews from the Crewpak.

For Master Scuba Diver you have to complete 5 full Specialties which means the Crewpak, Dives & when required Classwork. In my area Specialties cost between $100 and $250 each depending on the cost of the Crewpak & number of Dives required.

I think it is just a take off from NAUI's Master Diver certification, which really was (is) a separate cert. At least in the past, the individual NAUI instructor could put together a program that would take several months to complete.

All,

There ought to be a warning not to bring up the topic of PADI MSD on ScubaBoard to avoid the grief. The negative comments are entirely predictable. Might as well suggest using split fins, an integrated 2nd, an AI computer, or anything but a BP&W. A glutton for punishment might also suggest training with any of the major agencies is similar. Not that the threads have a propensity to repeat themselves, repeat themselves...

Good diving, Craig

Well there have not been many negative comments here. The OP wants to further their learning. Master Diver is not going to do this. I have pointed this out as have a few others. I know when I started diving I wanted to get my "Master Diver" card as I thought there would be a lot behind this card so it would actually mean something. There isn't.

If SB did not allow repetition, that would remove 98% of the content here so if you do not like to read repetition stay away from threads with topics that tend to get repeated and leave the rest of us to repeating things :)

Also, I hate split fins, integrated seconds, AI computers and anything other than a BP/W :D But to each their own!

Doc Craig,

I stayed out of this one just for you!

PS- when are you in the keys and jupiter again?

Hey Ron,

I had a great time diving in Key Largo 5/30-6/1 and a fantastic time diving with Underwater Explorers and Keven Metz in Boynton 6/6-9. Boynton and Jupiter are my Florida favorites, hope to get back soon. In the meantime, I have a the week of 7/12 with my son in T&C.

We'll dive together someday, take care and good diving, Craig

Looks like you on the homepage for Atlantic Diving and Trading Co, is that right? If I have the opportunity to come to Savannah, I'll try to look you up. My wife and I have had a couple of great vacations to Little St. Simons

Consider.

You do your AOW, and Rescue classes.

For your specialty classes, you choose these: Nitrox, Oxygen Provider, Coral Reef Awareness, Project aware and Equipment specialist... not ONE of which actually require you to get in the water.

You can litterally become a master diver with AOW, Rescue and 50 dives 20 feet deep for 20 minutes in a puddle in your back yard, at least according to PADI... not making a single actual dive in any specialty area.

The cert is a joke.
