I did bring a banana on board a boat trip in Maui... And yes the captain took it from me and threw it overboard explaining it was bad luck. It was immediately replaced with a sticky bun . Can't complain. I thought this was just his phobia until now. I think I may test this theory on all dive boats in hopes of trade up to something better

So, I have kind of a tradition on my boats. The divers call each other and someone brings banana bread every dive. EVERY dive. They won't leave the dock without it. We have great dives...... I am the one who brought it to begin with...

Why would anyone other than PB insist on insulting tradition still confuses me after all of this thread. I don't believe in luck, but many do - and the downline effect happens.

It was Traditional to Burn Witches at the stake, should we still honor that one as well? When grown men give up reason for rumor and superstition then they serve the same superstition and I only serve one master! So are we trading feeling for truth? Why not we just did as a country! :mooner:

Well, I like to respect other's traditions. My boat, however, is my boat. Well, my shp owner's boat. He doesn't follow that tradition, so I don't have to. Will I take my banana on other boats? With permission of the captain, yes. At the end of the day, It's his/her boat, so his/her rules......

Well, I'm grown, and I still don't walk under ladders, go around black cats crossing the road, (note that I have a black cat though), avoid living on the 13th floor, throw salt over my shoulder if I spill some, and say,"Bless you," after people sneeze.

I also don't expect anyone to agree with me just because I think it's so. Make your own decisions. Respect other's traditions, or not. I was raised to be respectful of others. I also have no problem with your beliefs. They are yours and don't affect me. I won't try to force my opinions on anybody.

Umm... does that include grabbing and throwing anything else they don't like overboard... divers that don't tip well... boyfriends... captured captains... gear other than what they sell??

It seems to me that there must be *some* line between "respecting another's custom" and having that custom inflicted on you...

(... just out of curiosity... was there a clearly posted sign in all appropriate languages, stating the nature of the custom, the rational for it and the potential consequences for infractions of the custom? How do we know it really WAS the custom and not just a cheap emulation of a documented custom followed by some other captain? Does the custom also apply to plantains??? Should the banana be thrown over the port or starboard side... or directly over the stern so that 'all your troubles can be put behind you'??? So many questions... so long a thread...)

Well now... THAT seems perfectly reasonable and understandable to me... just employing good solid judgement in my opinion...

You need to understand the back story - the guy that owns the boat works for Pepsi.
