I am one human that can empirically test my different fins. Just as I know that my road bike is faster than my mountain bike. I know I can go 10 miles on the street faster and with less fatigue with my road bike. I know that I can kick a 100 yards underwater faster and with less fatigue with my new split fins compared to my Rocket or Mares paddle fins. I can measure my own speed and fatigue. I use the word empirical to mean by experiment versus by theory.

Who sold you that hog wash! Its water and 800 times as dense! It has no leading edge! Good god, I am a pilot! If my wings were split I would land! Look at nature! What bird has a split wing? We are now in the 7th dimension with Ron L. Hubbard! I just will myself through the water! Propulsion and lift are two different things guys! Your a little far a field!

Why does the prop on a boat work the same as the prop on an aircraft?

Then you don't know what the word means! Look it up! You have a speedo meter do you?
Our a radar gun? That is not evidence what you can do on your bike! You know the great thing about freedom, your free to spend your money any way you want! Even split fins, but don't tell me something you can't prove like you have some magic beans that will take you to the giants house! If you want to support your position with thrust calculations! If you put both fins on a mechanical machine and measure the out put then you would have real evidence! So why doesn't the fin manufactures do that? Hummm, because it would prove they are only trying to sell you a product!

You are all arguing with the same person that started a tread saying global warming doesn't exist. Papa_Bear is only on SB to argue with people, and has yet to make a single post worth reading. I think he is trying to set the record for being on the most peoples ignore list.
I don't think he is only here to argue, though I am sure he is having fun getting everyone's goat. I've read some of Papa_Bear's ideas that make a lot of sense.

You are in a sad place papa. The tests have been done over and over. The results of multiple tests prove you way wrong. If you like your fins, good on you.

The most efficient fins are the best split fins. You can deny, the tests don't lie.

Why does the prop on a boat work the same as the prop on an aircraft?

My prop on my boat or my plane aren't split! A prop screws its way through the medium it is in! pitch and angle determines how far the prop will travel in one rotation! Does your split fin rotate now? If it does hold on to them! When they do any advantage would be negated by the need to return to its original shape! It is a law you can't break! you push down and the amount of force displaces a equal amount of water wight behind you pushing you forward! The more you can push the faster and further you can go! If you don't believe me jump in your pool and use only your hands to swim! First try your split fin open your fingers and swim! Now do it making a cup with your fingers together! Then report back, I haven't seen too many Olympic swimmer with their fingers wide open! Have you?

Read the test, they are opinions only! "I felt I went faster" or "With our fin he did the same swim faster" there are reasons besides mechanical that can and do account for that! Save your tiers for me will you! I am in a happy place pale! It is called knowledge!
The most expensive thing you pay for in your life is ignorance! Find out about mechanical energy and why they don't ask a real engineer about the fins! A SCUBA magazine gets money for their opinions! Your getting mine for free! But if you pay me enough I will sell your beans!

"The most efficient fins are the best split fins. You can deny, the tests don't lie." Now thats funny! How about lier's test? So if I test it must be true? Well I have!

The prop on a boat works on the aerodynamic principals we have been discussing. It does not "push" against the water. A swimmers fingers do not have the surface area of a wing or propeller.
Now, perhaps if they could add something the swimmer's appendeges. Oh wait.....

I haven't seen too many Olympic swimmer with their fingers wide open!

Wide open? No. However, research by the US Olympic team showed that slightly spreading your fingers improves thrust in the water if only by a small percentage. Then again, Olympic races are all about small percentages.

It is a simple analogy on how a human can compare speed (distance/elapsed time) and fatigue by observation. Man has been around for thousands of years without a radar gun and doing just that. And yes, I do know the meaning of the word empirical. No need for me to look it up. My brother lives near you. Next time I visit him perhaps a race - loser pays for lunch? We can empirically compare the 2 different types of fins.
