This is nicley put but I find it funny aswell as true.

It goes both ways...and we all have a choice...if you choose one way or the other you have a choice...some Cultures - as you put do not give you the choice. You pay a service charge even if you have gotten bad service - you still pay.

So to make it simple...do what you wish. tip do not tip...just do not insult anyone by mocking them because they choose to do something they love. And provide you with kindness even if you gave them attitude...Some of you ignorant a-holes have done in this thread.

Kindess..that is something you cannot pay for. And just because you paid your way on a charter..does not make you king or queen...folks do work for a living in this service industry.

To me this thread is really about people that can't understand that there are other cultures that don't think like theirs, they are close minded and would never think to ask if tipping is an insult or simpy not practiced where others live.
So big deal if you think ever DM should have a tip, would it be possible that there are people that come from other countries that don't practice tipping? And, that if they don't practice tipping they somehow must be cheap by the most extreme means.
Some of you need to travel more, I have not been to England, but I've been to Australia a couple of times and I love the Aussies and have met people that are very giving (they don't tip by the way). Don't be so crass as to put your culture as one that is better than theirs, just try to understand it. Don't be so rude as too intolerate divers like Almighty, just try to understand where they are coming from.

I can.

dennis read my all my post and it will answer your question,

In the cenotes at a myan lunch they serve a red water of some sot , water, coke, you have a choice of a pork, or beef plate.

Phillipi pays for the lunch He's the guide it is included with the diving.

Val from Belguim, cry's about the new divers on the boat, contstantly.

val say's he wants a beer, It's a quart so he wants to share cause he can't finish it.

Phillippie say's, all I ask for is pay for your beer. I just sat down from putting $5 in the tip jug.

Val looks at me astounding ,like I did'nt have the water or pop and would not look at the guide. I gave Phillippie $5 the beer was three I said to the myans keep it food was great.

I looked at val and said, how do you live with yourself, Hey say's jut fine thank you for asking, we laughed.

I told val how to fill his own Nitrox and a few other diving things. we got along great.

If his attitude was different and stingy acting, like they don't deserve it, I would Have ripped in to him about being a deadbeat looser.

YES I am My own Judge, captains and divemasters want everyone to dive, Thats how they make there living.

If I see a anoying diver to other divers, I will certainly aceralate to get them to have a bad dive day, these are alwaay's the divers that dont tip.

It's not that hard to tell if a boat excepts tips they have a tip jar or container on the boat. I have never found one person in my life that has not excepted a tip off the boat on land away from all the others. We simply let them know how much we appreciate them and let them know they are doing a GREAT job, we hand them an envelope and walk away. I am sure the first thing that runs through their minds is I can get gas all week or I can pay for or I can take my wife/girlfriend out to dinner tonight. In this day and time everyone neeeds money so to say it is a bad thing to give someone money for their service is bull I think you get any warm blooded person away from everyone else and they would be more than happy to take your money.
For a boat tip even if you give $5 it's better than not tipping at all.

Actually I had rented the tank from a totally different shop and hadn't noticed the slightly bent o-ring seal. They replaced it with a new nitrox tank free of charge. The DM actually hiked up to the shop and brought the tank down to me..

Very impressive. THAT deserves a respectable tip.

Almighty is getting what she deserves for pushing a closed minded philosophy she admits she doesn't always follow. Is stirring the pot a suitable activity for SB Staff?
:D

what i really need is a :stiringthepot: smilie!

DMs and dive boat crew members don't deserve tips. They are almost universally lazy, and there is no reason for a paying passenger to subsidize their misguided carreer decisions. This is especially true if you set your own dive gear up or otherwise don't feel you need or want the alleged "services" that these slackers purport to provide. If they are so stupid as to work for free in the first place, there's really no need for you to give them another thought. You owe them nothing more than your contempt.

Maybe I was wrong, but I read rjp's post as being facetious and thought he meant the exact opposite of what he was saying.

Maybe my "sarcasm radar" is off or I just give people the benefit of the doubt too often, lol.
Sarcasm? Moi?

Never!

:eyebrow:
You just have to wonder whatever must have happened to give RJP such a callous attitude. So sad in one so young.
Kamchatka, if you zoom out a little you might see the bigger picture! Tunnel vision is very dark and stinky! :D

Aloha all you bitter cheapskates,

...

As a captain I could just head straight toward the site full throttle with gear bouncing and spray flying and any diver should be aware of sea conditions, or I could skillfully pilot the vessel in a safe and comfortable way to make the surface journey as enjoyable as possible.

...

If you can't afford the tip, don't do the trip! :shakehead:

There is a difference between "going above and beyond" and just doing your job well. If you go full throttle and make me sea-sick -- you won't have any customers. I'm in the consulting profession. When I put in 80 hour weeks to get a report done well, I don't expect a tip -- I expect more clients. My wage should be (and is) determined by the market and by negotiating with my employer. Why should my clients "tip" me for doing what they paid me to do?

I'll dive with you, cap! And if you don't pilot the vessel in a safe way, and I get damaged due to your reckless operation, I promise to operate your former business in a professional manner, after the lawsuit.
I can afford the tip. But, as a rich guy said to me many years ago, "Even rich people don't like to get ripped off."

It's very funny that many SB'ers speak volumes between the lines and many other SB'ers don't know what between the lines means. :rofl3::rofl3:

You two way missed my point! Most dive operators can not charge a proper price because most divers are too cheap! The result of that is crappy wages for the crew. If the tips are crappy also, the professional crew will leave and the only crew that will work for crappy money is crappy crew. And thanks for reminding me, it's not just crappy tippers that hurt diving; insurance costs are sky high because of sue-happy Westerners who think they can own somebody else's business because a dive tank fell on their toe! :shakehead: :shakehead:

Stinky??
halemano, what exactly does it smell like? (Just so's we'll all know)

My experience is from growing up near cattle stock yards. After a while you get used to the smell and don't really notice it, but it does not mean it doesn't stink! :11:
