....Its modern form may have orginated in coffee houses of England in the 16th century ......
yeah, and back in the 1700's the brits use to transport convicts to australia..... happily this tradition died with the dodo :D

Rude according to who and what culture though? Whats wrong with the UKs service charge??
Are you saying the service is better because you tip??
Or that people go all out on service expecting a tip, and are disappointed if they dont get one.

Surely people should do there best at what they do because it is the honourable thing to do.

Lets get it straight, tipping is not paying, If I have paid already why should I tip.

Now, just a pet peeve of mine here. Tipping is a custom in quite a few countries, one of them being the U.S. Now I know, we are your uncultured, bastard stepchild, but we do have customs, and that is one of them.

So, just like anyplace else you may travel, you should respect the customs of that society.

Just a little tip for you there. ;)

Now, as for the UK's service charge which is what, ten to 15 percent? Would you rather have the option of giving the person who serves you ten to 15 percent or more or less based upon the level and quality of service they provided or be forced into paying that whether they did a good job or not?

We could debate all day about which way is better.

What I have noticed: Americans tip. Canadians do not. Seeing that I sometimes work a charter boat in Canada, to help out the Captain, would be nice if someone tipped me!! I don't get paid to help out!

whoji< was wacking my post on tipping in mexico . Didn't really Know where he was going with this, now on this thread I do.

He posted that a britt operation gave him a great deal on diving and prices, Divemex does 2 cenotes for $81 with a five day package, cozemul, playa del carma reefs.

he paid $70 for one cenote, and $120 for two cenotes.

No wonder he's pissed About tipping.

my gosh If you are on this board you can get grat deals and tip ,Or pay alot and whine about tipping.

What is the major problem with tipping on a charter boat. Local or elsewhere. The boat for hire takes you to a dive site. May provide water and or a snack. May even offer the service of a DM or a guided tour.

Now if the Dm on duty is there and provides you with a smile, chatts it up, Helps you get set up by placign your gear in the appointed palces, Hauls your tanks from the dock to the boat...helps you in any way possible. helps you in and out of the water. Changes your tanks around for you, may offer some advice. May fix something for you, etc..and provide a comprehensive dive briefing so you can enjoy your dives.

Why not slip the lad a few bucks for treating you with respect and kindness. Especially if they went beyond what you expected. even the littles things makes a difference.

Now if you got treated like crap..I would not tip either. nor would I return to that Dive OP.

All I am reading from this threat is how many of you are cheap asses and want everything served to you on a silver platter because you paid for a BAISC service. Which is a taxi ride to and from the dive site.

What makes a dive charter stand out is the quality of service you get on the boat from the crew whom CHOOSE to be there because they love there sport as you do - so treat them with respect.

Ever go to a nice restaurant. You paid for your meal, and it was served to you with respect and a smile...do you not tip the person whom took care of you....same ****ing thing on a charter boat...

......Now if the Dm on duty is there and provides your with a smile, ........
i will smile back

......helps you in and out of the water.........
doubt this will happen

.. Changes your tanks around for you......
NEVER happens

.......may offer some advice. .......
i expect a dive brief to be part of the paid charter

.......May fix something for you, etc.........
seriously doubt this will ever happen

........and provide a comprehensive dive briefing ......
again - this is part of the paid charter - i doubt legally any boat owner will just drop divers into the water on a whim and hope they make it back to the anchor

:D

what i really need is a :stiringthepot: smilie!

If you had read my previous posts you would notice that I did actually state I tip when in the US for the exact reasons.

As for what is better. We dont have a choice in the UK as per the service charge, so its nice to make full use of that when in other countries.

I'm sorry, I should have been a bit clearer. I didn't mean to imply that you were one of those "Ugly Englishmen" who run about the world doing things the way you like because that's how you do it back home.

I was just stating that while we do seem to be an industry leader, Americans don't have the market cornered when it comes to traveling to foreign countries and behaving like boarish morons. :D

And it isn't unheard of for a non-American to use the "we don't tip at home" excuse here.

I would expect respect and kindness anyway - thats just a given - i consider it to be my personal responsibilty in general to others (thanks mom) - and expect it in return.

But really... five bucks per tank is more than a few bucks (a few is three in my mind). On top of a $70 trip charge and $10 to $15 per tank rental.

I tip, I really do. But sometimes I do it more out of obligation than because the person deserves it.

You guys have all made some very valid points. But I think its dumb to suck up to people only with the intentions of getting a good tip - or on the flip side of that - offer *****ty/half @ss/NO service knowing you will likely get tipped out of custom.
