ahem!

unless of course the DM is a indigenous person from where you are diving (ie, a local and not an american), then i would tip or give them a gift (as for some customs, tipping is offensive)

if the dm is an american i revert to RJP's post above :D

:rofl3:

DMs and dive boat crew members don't deserve tips. They are almost universally lazy, and there is no reason for a paying passenger to subsidize their misguided carreer decisions. This is especially true if you set your own dive gear up or otherwise don't feel you need or want the alleged "services" that these slackers purport to provide. If they are so stupid as to work for free in the first place, there's really no need for you to give them another thought. You owe them nothing more than your contempt.

Dude! What's up with that!??!

Only problem here in the US is that for some strange reason all the locals ARE American. (At least the indigenous ones any way.)
I'm glad you added the "(At least the indigenous ones any way.)" But isn't that like saying, "All NJ politicians are honest except for the corrupt ones"?

What crew member services am I entitled to with the payment of my Fee? Some, it would seem, think that the Fee that the customers has already Paid doesnt include any actual service, and that service is paid for After the trip in the form of a tip.

I disagree. I feel a Tip is Extra payment for (and here's the Tricky part for Some) EXTRA Service (cus' I've already paid you {or your captain} for Basic Service). I'm not against the concept of tipping, I tip Well when warranted, but I Wont tip "because I'm supposed to" , or because someone cant/wont negotiate a higher wage. A tip stops being a tip when its become a Fee.

"there is no reason for a paying passenger to subsidize their misguided carreer decisions." - Ah! a gem of Truth! will you look at that :) .

Dont blame/guilt the customer because the Market has determined your worth. As it stands now there is an exchange, your getting dive hours, and the boat captain is getting your "services". At the point you no longer need/want the hours you either Leave or re-negotiate (at which point he'll probably tell you to go take a flying leap as {apparently} there are many more DM's in the marketplace than needed. Its simple economics, if DM's are a dime a dozen that Will have an effect on what their wage will be. Supply and Demand. If there werent enough DM's Willing to work for the current wage then the captains would either HAVE to pay more to entice the remaining pool, or Not carry a DM on the boat (and potentially alienate clients).

RJP is obviously from a location North of the Mason-Dixon line.......Southern Ladies & Gentlemen certainly do not share this attitude! Right on Richesb

Why hasn't there been a thread on this subject before? It certainly needs addressing so that all of us divers' ships are sailing in the same direction! Thanks for introducing it, lightwalk333.

A perceptive and, no doubt, accurate assessment of the situation.

There has been a thread on this before. Someone linked it on page one.

When you get your sweet tea at a resturant brought to your table ina pleasant and timely manner, you have already paid for it. Why would you ever tip.

From my last post:
While it would be nice to have the tip added into the cost, the operators are just not willing to take it on. DMs take the positions because they like it, and if they provide good service, they make ok money from the tips. So they do know going into it they may not make much money, but that is the deal take it or leave it. No large corporations with thousand of employees to organize...

I think tipping is fairly simple. Ask yourself, "What would I tip a waiter or waitress that does a good job?" Then add to that the ability of a good DM to save your life in an emergency... I'd rather do my part to keep the qualified person on the boat...

NEVERMIND!!! My bad, they don't have sweet tea up there. I forgot. :)

Maybe I was wrong, but I read rjp's post as being facetious and thought he meant the exact opposite of what he was saying.

Maybe my "sarcasm radar" is off or I just give people the benefit of the doubt too often, lol.
