Will be there in a few weeks...let me know which restaurants you would recommend. Playa recommendations would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

If you are diving with one of the small boat operators, you will likely get to spend your SI at one (or more) of the West side beach clubs. Playa Palancar is my favorite.

I am in Cozumel right now. Parilla Mission on 30th Ave is great. $4 for tacos and a taco bar full of rice, beans, potatoes, cactus, mushrooms, onions and other yummy stuff. $4 Margaritas that I think are the best I have had so far. I like the lady who runs this place, she is great. Its clean and just so good.

Chilangos on 30th and Calle 5. $2 for a big tortilla full of whatever you choose. Yummy.

Sorissi (Italian) is on 3rd st near the water... $$$ 33 for a appetizer and main, and two glasses of decent chianti. I like the man who runs this. He is warm, friendly and makes the best best gelato I have ever had. They let you taste any flavour. Nice for a special night out. They have porcini, olive, anchovy, or tomato bruchetta, which is tasty and I had home made past stuffed with goat cheese, basil and topped with a zingy tomato spicey sauce.

Yep, I couldn't possibly name ALL of the good places without forgetting some...and the list keeps growing!

The only place on your list that I could not personally recommend with a clear conscience (based on MY knowledge, tastes & past experiences there) is Las Palmeras. Possibly the biggest tourist trap on the island. Make sure you check your bill carefully.

I can agree to disagree on that one. A 25+ year friend of my family is one of the head waiters there, and we always eat there a couple of times when we visit. It's true that they get a lot of tourists there, but I would hardly class them with Carlos n' Charlie's, Margaritaville, Senor Frog's, and Hard Rock Cafe. I've never had a problem with my bill there.

Los Gavilanes has been closed for awhile.[/quote]

True that? I thought that they were getting a new location somewhere near Camillo's. Oh, well. It was a cool little place when it was a few doors down from Sonora.

Caletita (great new place for fish/shrimp tacos down near Caribe Blu)

If this is the new place we ate at between Caribe Blu and the lighthouse I will wholeheartedly agree. We ate there a few days after they opened so their menu was quite limited... actually just shrimp & fish tacos. They were every bit as good as Camillo's and they have a MUCH nicer view :D

One drawback was they didn't have any chipotle sauce like they do at Camillo's... or any Coca light. I'm assuming the Coca light situation has been worked out though :14:

I'm not at all classifying them with the places youmentioned. It's a tourist trap because it's not obvious. When you go into those other places, you KNOW they are for tourists...so they don't meet my definition of a tourist trap in this context.

I don't doubt you've never had a problem with your bill if you have a long time friend in charge there, but I am telling you that bill padding happens (has happened) there....it happend to me personally TWICE with two different waiters...and I can list numerous others that it's happend to. There have even been threads about it on other Cozumel sites that were completely seperate from my experiences. I'm fair and I think you know that. I wouldn't be saying this if it weren't true.

As I say, I can agree to disagree on that. I have never had a problem there and I have never gotten any bad reports from anyone I have sent there.

La Mission on 30th......is by far the best Mexican food at the best price.

Ditto. The best and least expensive lunch. I think I paid $8 US and they had a little buffet table. Very casual and I especially love that it's away from the tourist area, although you can walk to it if you don't mind a good walk. I love getting away from that "Cancun-like" atmosphere around the waterfront.

We always make sure we take a lunch at Sabores (right around the corner from Christi's shop on Avenida 5 entre Calle 3 y 5).

Eat in the back yard amongst the palms and iguanas. The iced tea is fantastic.

Yes the gelato!

We visited El Moro May 2007 and had a great meal (excellent value for money).
