Hello! Just an intro- recent Widower (12/14/2023) that's decided to travel extensively solo. My first overseas trip is to Bali and plan on doing some diving there. I haven't dove with a tank since 1996 , but did extensive free diving until my daughter was 5. So, after a 25 year hiatus I'm signed up for a refresher and diving while there. Safety is paramount, especially now. Former LA County, NAUI, and PADI certs

I'm sorry for your loss. I think Bali's a great choice--it really feels like another world, both above and below the water. There's a lot of good advice on ScubaBoard about Bali diving, as you likely already know.

Thanks Morgan, actually I haven't searched Bali diving on the board just yet. I appreciate your response.

What kind of things do you want to see and what kind of diving do you want to do?

Sorry I'm just getting back to you now after returning last month. Below surface clear water with tons of marine life ( primarily Reef, and if possible pelagic life) . My experience of Bali was good for tropical diving. I would never recommend the diver operator which was subbed out from the local tour operator ( Diving gear that was to be provided (FOG) was missing depth gauges and qualified DM's ( our second day diving we ended up doing deco dive without a safety stop) so I've now been schooled. That's on me though.
Now having all my equipment overhauled and will be purchasing new gear. I loved the dive experience none the less and planning more dive trips overseas 😀.

This post (or future ones) should probably be posted in the Indonesia regional sub-forum, where it will likely get more responses. I also love Bali diving and it's a great way to get back into the sport. I've done some trip reports and there's lots of great info in the Indonesia sub-forum so be sure to check it out.

Hey, I’m a widow…6 years. I havent been diving in over 10 years. I’m a good swimmer, so I decided to blow off the refresher and do an advance water dive class. I friended the owner if the local dive shop. I have a very big pool and live in a very small beach town. I negotiated. They are using my pool for the baby divers and I will be there to test my brand spanking new equipment. I always rented. No more!

Oh… my widower friend, i am very sorry for your loss.
Eventually, things will get a tiny bit better… enough for you to be able to think about what you want the rest of your life to look like. Every day is a gift…a journey, not a destination. In December, I’m going to Mexico. I will dive with the bull sharks. Why don’t you come with! We can have separate quarters. Two is just more fun, I too checked out Bali. It sounds like i can have slave men at my feet. That’s nice. But, as I understand, the diving isn’t great.

The bulls will actually force the excrement from my colon. I’m going for that. Lol Think about it. We can be back by Christmas or we don’t have to be. I must tell you that Christmas/Hanukkah is not a good time for me. That’s why I’m going. Think about it. You could poop your pants too by the new year. Please advise.

Bali diving is world class...what are you talking about. Do you know there are photo shoot-outs held there often and that many award winning published UW photographers get to Bali as often as they can? Mexico diving is definitely sub par to any in the coral triangle.

Sorry to hear about your negative experience in Bali, this is one of my favourite destinations.

There ere a few SB members living there and a solid recommendation could have been given had I seen this post earlier.

That said, welcome to SB and please check out what other members have experienced elsewhere when researching destinations.

My reading was the op "checked out" Bali, i.e. she researched going there but has never been. Obviously her sources were not very good. Not sure what the "slaves" at her feet reference is to; in fact the op is rather strange with all the talk of "excrement," "poop," and "slaves." If I dived with the op, it would definitely be in a dry-suit. And what does any of this have to do with scuba diving :whistling::whistling::whistling:
