The owner does not have to be the one to renew it. I’m sure it makes it a little easier, but there are some renewals that have been handled by PSI, which is not a tank manufacturing organization. :)

DOT has made it very clear that they do not want this to lapse. They have stated that they will do everything possible to make this happen. And anyone, even an individual, can do the process. The odds of it not being renewed because no one is willing to do the paperwork is virtually zero.

As long as SP9791 tanks do not start developing unexpected dangerous problems (i.e. Aluminum 6351 – type issues) these tanks will get renewed.

But hey: if there’s anyone out there nervous about their E – 9791 tanks, I’ll happily pay double the cost of scrap for them…. And I’ll pay shipping. :)

When I got my PST tanks, it was $200 for a pair ($100 each) of PST Steel 100s.

Not just PST. All 3442 cylinders are special permit. Each manufacturer must file for their own permit. Worthington for examples has a special permit for their E cylinders. It’s a different number than PSTs but the same process. Even though Worthington doesn’t manufacture them anymore they did renew their special permit earlier this month and it’s good through September 30, 2026.
Hi, apologies if I'm jumping in mid-thread. Do we happen to know about the status of the Worthington/XS Scuba E-series permit? The SP9791 permit used by PST/G3 Industries is set to expire in a similar timeframe (November 2026). I have reached out to PSI-PCI as well as G3 Industries but could not get a definitive answer. I have been told that these permits are routinely renewed (as SP9791 was in December 2022).

That's over 13 months out.... Seeing that the renewals have been ongoing, it is logical to think that it will happen again, but who knows a year from now...

hopefully G3 will just file the renewal paperwork, the one caveat is i think they got out of the LNG cylinder business which may be a complication

I have one steel 120 that is an SP14157
I hope there are no hiccups, that's my favorite tank.
The other 120 is a Faber SP13488 and I'm not worried about that one.

I wouldn't be too worried about the SP14157 - seems XS/Worthington are the most popular in the US for non-painted steel tanks.
