Yes. If a rig is not balanced, there should be either additional lift and/or ditchable ie) unnecessary ballast that can be dropped (can light, large camera, some removable weight, etc) in the event of a wing failure. You start with a balanced rig, then add any gear that may be necessary for a dive.

Tech divers often dive unbalanced rigs, but they are likely to be in a drysuit with ditchable ballast. In other words, what is making them unbalanced is usually ditchable.

I haven't met many tec divers using dry suit in our part of the world(SE Asia) unless they are using certain dive agency approved centres!

Are you descending as fast as you can already?


Let's for amusements sake, say you're starting your dive 10lbs heavy (weight of gas in your tank). "Balanced" rig kinda deal.

Find a 10lb lead weight/rock. Drop that overboard. Are you descending that fast? Worst case, that's as fast as you'll descend.
