Mike,

Thanks again for the early birthday gift - the prototype mask!

We must have almost crosssed paths. We were on the Big Island Aug. 31 - Sep. 6 (Captain Cook area), Maui Sep. 6 - Sep. 10 (Launipoko area), and Kauai Sep. 10 -Sep. 15 (Poipu area). It was a great trip but overall transit time to & fro (MSY-IAH-LAX-HNL) and the same on return reminded us why Pacific trips are special trips for us.

I clearly saw lots of macro life, even in the more murky waters at Koloa Landing, and particularly during dusk and night dives on Maui at Old Airport Beach, where dim lighting makes eye focusing on the small stuff more challenging at my vintage. They should rename Old Airport Beach "Eel City" to counter "Turtle Town" to the south!

I'll try hunting down an X-strap before next trip (sometime in 2008 not yet determined).

If you don't mind me asking where did you stay in the Captain Cook area and who did you use for a dive operator?

My family is going next summer. We already have the air flights booked (frequent flyer miles) but not the accommodations or the dive operator?

Stayed in a home called Hale Lotus, Listing #75257 on VRBO.com We had an easy walk to the very much less crowded water access. No complaints, everything as-advertised, along with a box of fresh mangos picked on the property left on our doorstep one morning. Don't miss trying the white flesh pineapple, we were there at the end of the season.

Dove with South Kona Scuba, associated with the Kona Boys surf shop, just up the hill from the property we stayed at. We rented tanks & weights and did our own thing shore diving, usually right by where we stayed or Two Step at the Place of Refuge park.

XS Scuba and others you'll find that. I found XS to offer quality gear at good prices. I have mask bags, mesh bags, weight bags a 2mm shorty a few snorkels and mask. I like there mesh bag with wheels for caring gear on a boat. They have a great low pair if boots, with tennis shoe bottoms and stretch neo.
