Chris Bangs:
May be doing a "very rare" US visit this winter December or January to visit my mother in AZ. My wife wants to do a couple of days in So Cal ( San Fernando Valley ) to buy some American"size furniture at American prices, for our home and hotel here in Japan If so maybe I can get in a day of diving. will bring a dry suit, reg, mask and computer ( will need to rent the rest as my camera equipment alone tends to exceeds airline luggage limits these days),

At the very least I would just enjoy getting together with you So Cal folks one evening as That would be better than any dive.

Chris

NOT to be presumptuous about your time, but Chris, if you do make it out here, I know a few people (at least me :) ) might be interested on a primer in your macro photo work, or photo stuff in general

Regarding the ferry for our Sept. 18 trip. Here's the list of ferries from Downtown Long Beach (Catallina Landing) to Avalon:

DEPART FREQUENCY
6:15 am Daily
8:30 am Daily
10:00 am Daily
12:15 pm Daily
2:00 pm Daily
4:45 pm Daily
6:20 pm Daily except Friday
7:00 pm Friday

I would recommend the 6:15 ferry for a couple of reasons: I've taken it about 4 times this summer, and it has NEVER been more than 75% full, so you can book last minute and still get on. There's also room to spread out. The later ferries get booked quickly, and unless you make reservations at least 1-2 weeks in advance you won't get anything. Well, at least during the summer that seems to be the case. Also, the ferry arrives around 7:15-7:30am, and the tank rental place near the Casino opens at 8am, so you can take a leisurely stroll over, grab some breakfast, and beat the crowd.

I've always taken the 2:05 pm return ferry, but there's also a 3:45pm. The 2:05 has always been almost empty on return, which is nice because you don't have to wait in a long line back in Long Beach trying to get out of the parking garage. Once, when we went to the Jazz Festival at the Casino (last October I think), we took the last ferry back and waited over 45 minutes in line to get out of the garage.

Anyway, our trip is only about a week and a half away...

Thanks, Jim, for putting the Long Beach departures up... Again, for those who are planning ferry trips here is the link Catalina Express Schedule for post-Labor Day trips.

I am leaning towards the early 6:15 departure and a later return (either 6:30 or 8:05), to allow time for at least 3 dives, lunch, and maybe post-dive refreshment :).

Can we check who else is going now?? San Diego folks? Divebrasil?

Not a problem, I may be doing other presentations as well. As soon as I know my schedule I will let the SoCan divers know.

Time to dive!

Guam report! Water temp 82, vis about 100 ft ( adverage ) big swell, slight current (outer walls ). rain ( Macro today )

First of all, Chris, you are making us jealous with your dive reports... just for that, we each get a photo tip when you get here (and maybe you will speak at our SoCal Oly User Group meeting -- if you have time and we ask really nicely??).

OK, for the "Wrinkles in Absentia" dive, we have:

divebuddysean
mccabejc
shaka zulu (maybe)
sapphire
andrewjd
headhunter (maybe)
arnaud
kelphelper (maybe)
diver jan (maybe)
tonyc +1
divebrasil (maybe)

That's all I see... any corrections/additions/subtractions :)??

sapphire:
When do you need help? Do you have a pool? I would be happy to help if I can....
I want to offer a HUGE thank you to sapphire for helping me out with my little pool session.

We did this "commercial style" with her acting as surface support, while I was contemplating changing my name to Charlie Fox.

It took a while (a lot longer than I thought it would), but I'm glad I did this little gear adjustment in a pool. Next stop Catalina baby! :crafty:

Change me from a "maybe" to a "travelin' member" for the "Wrinkles in Absentia" dive! :dazzler1:

I'll take the 6:15am from Long Beach, but I'll have to start practicing getting up early. I'm not much of a morning person. :11:

So, can I get one more smilie on this post to indicate my total appreciation! (It wouldn't let me, but here is a text smilie) :-D

Christian

OK, my ferry is booked now too! I will be getting up early with the crazy ones!

A side note, Sept. 18th is International Coastal Cleanup Day. I know that there are activities on many SoCal beaches. but I do not know if there is anything official in Catalina. At the very least, we can all be on the lookout for trash underwater and in the parking lot, just to join in the spirit of the occasion :)!!

See you all there!
