Let us know when computer chips are readily available for car manufacturers. I refuse to pay the wildy inflated prices for new cars these days.
Still looking at a 8+ Month wait until things are back to normal. We can only build 400~ vehicles a day at my plant...

The computer chip issue is more a manufacturing problem than a shipping one. Almost all microchips are made by TSMC, and TSMC is at 100% and has been for a very long time. That's why Intel and a few others are building new fabs.

Yes, I realize your car chip isn't an Intel CPU but it's likely got the same problem as the Intel CPU.

It's kind of an exciting time imo.. there hasn't been any competition for microchip manufacturing for many years. Who knows what will happen!

I work at Fluke Electronics...and I'm over on the service/ repair/ calibration side of things. We have seen China go through multiple lockdowns on and off - for two + years...we are feeling it - lack of inventory of PCB's, capacitors, resistors, etc - has just meant our lead times for repairs are now several MONTHS out.

In talking w/ the parts inventory supervisors about a week ago - they don't see light at the end of the tunnel yet. We are going to be feeling this pain for many months to come.

That's a kick in the nuts for the Americans to start bringing these types of industries back home but I doubt they will wake up any time soon. If China goes in to invade Taiwan, that's when we go back to caves.

I fixed that for you.

But...have some faith in the USA.

Lots happening.

Yes, I agree for sure.

I hope that they succeed but the US government is useless in supporting US industries and counteracting what the Chinese do. I know this for fact from personal experience and competing against the Chinese in third world markets especially in technology related markets. The US government doesn't help at all. I can't say much more but the situation is simply too dire.

Which segues nicely into the convo about personal hygiene habits around the world.

Sometimes, ill take the cave. So long as there's diving.

Biden’s desperate. Intel even more so. They’ve lost leadership. A good friend works there. They are betting everything on US manufacture. No one can afford to lose this. Especially Taiwan. Will be interesting.

I left Intel in August of 2000. It was a bad sign when "no company t-shirts" Otellini took the helm from Barrett. Otellini really set the company back. I don't have much confidence in Gelsinger either, given the way he ran ProShare in the 90s. Doesn't matter that he resembles Gates. But I hope I'm wrong about him.

The irony is that TSMC was middle of the road in terms of capabilities/quality way back when. In 1994, I performed chipset construction analysis on Intel chipsets that were outsourced. This was before fabs churning out 486s switched over to chipsets. I remember how good Hitachi was, what they built for Intel exceeded their documentation. Now look at TSMC. I haven't followed their development closely, but they sure made some good investments. As long as they stay hungry, I don't see Intel catching up anytime soon.

Clinton/Gore were really unfriendly to tech, ironic considering it was the tech boom that they took so much undeserved credit.

Can we just start making our own stuff again already?
In a service based economy people are stressed because they have to be nice. If you make something everyone needs, you can be your natural ornery self. Better for mental health.
