At some point a BP&W is probably in my future. So while I'm waiting for that day I have been paying attention and learning what there is to learn.

My question is regarding the placement of most (all?) rear dump valves. From what I can tell they are on the bottom surface of the wing. My Sherwood Avid BC has the back dump on the top surface and that seems to make sense and it sure works well. So what's with the wings?

Pete

Pete,

Consider a wing that has wrapped up around a horizontal tank. Having the rear dump on the tank side of the bladder means the diver has to reach around the wing to find the valve. While this may be possible on small wings single tank wings, it would be near impossible on a 60-65 lbs doubles wing.

With the rear dump on the divers side of the wing it's easier to find. You do need to pay attention to which direction you pull the string. If you pull it "down" or towards the bottom of the sea you usually won't dump any gas, because you have pulled the valve away from where the gas is in the wing.

You need to pull it "Up" towards the surface. That's where the gas bubble is.

Hope this helps.

Be careful Pete. Once the journey begins, you can never go back. Not that you'll want to ... :D

Thanks Tobin, that makes sense.

Pete

one note: DiveRite has the Venture wing valve on the tank side (unless that has changed in their production line)

At first I thought it would be difficult to find on the divers side, but it turns out that it's easier due to the things Tobin noted.

Aloha, Tim

P.S. if you happen to be over this way, I have a plate/wing your'e welcome to take for a test dive or two ;)

I have two venture wings, one has the dump on the tank side and one has the dump on the wing side. Having it on the tank side is a PITA.

The journey is coming closer to and end. Have already dove the plate and wing (DSS single tank rig) in ow and the pool. Tomorrow I head for the lake with my newly configured reg with the 7ft hose and bungied octo. The console has been relegated to my new alpha 7 set up for ow classes when my instructor wants me to go "conventional". I also have a new oceanic GT3 w/cdx5 reg that I put the second stage on the bungee. The 1st stage is waiting for me to put my double 95's together. Oh my! It seems that it may never end. How about deco and trimix? Sorry got carried away. Diver side dump.

If there is anything I could change about my bp and wing set up is.....I will make sure my next wing has a shoulder dump

Realistically shoulder dumps are not as useful as you might think. Not to mention yanking on your inflator might be a bad idea...just a thought.
