Actually I found them very useful on my vest style bcd. There is a lot of discussion on inflator hose dumping. I had called the manufacturer of my vest style and they said they built it to be pulled on. Depends on what you like and dont like. I have never known of a failure at that point that wasnt caused by improper mounting and not catching it in an equipment check.

To each their own.
 
One of my wings initially came with the shoulder dump valve. I never really use it so I ended up removing it with a non-exhaust elbow. Could be of some personal preference.

But I have seen my instructor accidently pulled off the whole inflator from his BC in the pool before.
